AMD borrowing Nvidia's sharpies?

This is disappointing news... I was hoping for 28nm architectural refreshes from both sides early this year. If AMD are re-branding the existing 7-series chips, then it doesn't bode well for anything new appearing from them in the next six months. That leaves Nvidia, and I shudder to think how a new range of Nvidia cards would be priced without serious competition from AMD.

Did you not read what the AMD rep said?

"OEM's requested these parts be re-branded" they are 7### GPU's renamed at the request of OEM's, they are NOT 8### series GPU's and were never intended to be.

Isn't this just a 7970 GHz edition or am I missing something? although if it's on a smaller processor and less hot/power hungry I think it would be a nice improvement for non-7970 owners.

I don't understand what you're trying to say... These 7-series GPUs are being rebranded as 8-series, are they not? That doesn't bode well for the AMD 28nm GPU refresh being available in the next couple of months - even less so if the rebranding was driven by OEM requests, as it shows OEMs are concerned that the 7-series would otherwise be around for a long time (if a "true" 8-series was around the corner, a 7-series rebrand would be unnecessary).

Hi there

8000 retail series with the new correct specification shall come in 4-5 months time.

I've invited Thracks and a UK guy to come to these very forums to help with AMD enquiries simply because I am spending less time on the forums due to being so busy.

What he's saying is that OEMs requested AMD to rebrand some 7 series chips to 8 series to use in OEM environments.

It means these rebranded cards won't see the retail channel. It has no bearing on the refresh of GPUs if they have done it solely at the request of OEMs.

OEMs are likely doing it simply because the 7 series launched nearly exactly a year ago and want something new to list their products as.

OEMs love the numbers game.

Well it depends on how you look at it really. The chances are these are cards no one will really be able to buy for a specific market.

If they were simply rebranding the 7 series and then selling them via the retail channel as 8 series, very disappointing, I agree.

But at the moment, it just looks like a special request for OEM customers of theirs, and more often than not, OEM parts numbers make little to no sense anyway.

nVidia will have done the same sort of rebranding upon OEM request.

Probably the buying public will associate the 7 series with Windows 7.

If you are buying a computer running Windows 8 and it has an 8 series graphics card then it kind of helps I imagine.

It reminds me of the 8800GTS-9800GTX iirc, they were essentialy the same cards but with a small rehash.

Have AMD swapped building with Nvidia?
