So Apophis, the asteroid with the greatest chance of hitting Earth, makes a flyby tonight. Good for scientists so that they can study it and predict its future path.

The thing could hit us in 2036. We will know in 2029 whether that will happen. Doesn't that give us enough time to get a nuclear warhead in place and blow the thing out the ether en route [not en croute]?

I'd actually like to see it hit us to be honest..

Once in a lifetime event and all that..

" it would strike the Earth with 100 times the energy in our largest nuclear bombs, said Prof Fitzsimmons."

That doesn't sounds like an E.L.E to me and I for one would like to see it.

Can't we just send Bruce Willis and Richard Dean Anderson up there to deal with it? :p

Hopefully it won't hit though as it'd kinda ruin everyone's day.

Neither are spring chickens so we should get both to start training their replacements. Especially for R. D. A. we'd need a Macyver/O'Neill crossover on a mission like that! :p

I'll be either dead or 79 so not bothered.
I would love to go out by waiting for a massive tsunami coming at me and just before it hits I blow my brains out with a shotgun.

Blimey Mr Dimple, a tsunami in stoke on trent:eek:

A nudge is all the asteroid would need to change orbit, easy:)

I really makes me angry to think about all the billions of dollars NASA and the like wastes studying stuff like asteroids when there are still poor people in Africa who don't have access to basic human needs like ipads and organically grown non-GMO food. Won't anyone think of the Africans?!

This crops up every time the floods come on the TV and Mrs Dimple asks what if it happened here.
I always reply it will have to be a flood of biblical proportions because we live on the top of a hill and to one side of us would be the A50 which would be like having the Panama Canal..
