BBC R4 This morning..A Cure fore Deafness!

Listening to this on the drive in I was amazed, as I often am by science. Harvard medical researchers have partially cured deafness in laboratory mice using drugs to stimulate the growth of hair cells (so called because of their appearance iirc). It's not a cure all, and its a long way off, but should be ready by the time I need it .

Very rarely are deaf people 100% deaf, I used to be the rep for 25 deaf people and only one was 100%, the rest could hear a bit.
I'm 75% deaf so still have a lot of hearing left.

That would be cool. My Dad is pretty deaf, he's 56, but I am 30 and I don't want the thought of going deaf as well.

The bloke who has tested me 3 times knows my history because he plays in bands himself and he reckons my deafness is hereditary.. Apparently I can be fixed with an operation but I can't be bothered.

My wife has high frequency hearing loss with a hearing aid in both ears. They think from birth but it wasn't discovered until she was aged 6 or 7.

Her ears themselves are perfectly fine and all in working order, something in her braynes.

So no, not a cure for all deafness.

Care to expand? I'm in the same position but had it from birth and so far no one has come up with a way to make it better..
