Men are OPPRESSED

Is that not fascist? :D

No. :p

Racists and other bigots are just that; the fact that I want to drown their minority voice out even further is not particularly fascist to me. ;)

I can say it's fun at times, but disheartening people can draw such conclusions from basically **** all with some familiar regularity..

Was reading a few articles on rights, and started to think that men are now the underclass, oppressed by all other groups.

think its time for men specially straight men to rise up and fight the oppression that other groups have enforced onto us.
Man power, Power to straight men.

Using the work of Connell and other theorists, I discuss the implications of the proposed definition for the oppression of women and suggest that men, too, are systematically mistreated and therefore oppressed in modern societies. This structural concept of men's oppression is compared with the idea developed in the men's movement of the 1970s that men are oppressed by sex roles, and with more recent discourses of masculinity. I argue that men may have conflicting interests in relation to the gender order.

Positive action creates over use. the reason why I have started to think this way, last night my mates friend was taken into hospital for attempted suicide.
His wife won the court battle, over the kid, had too hand over the family home which was his parents and given to him before he even got married and had the kid, has to pay a huge amount out of his wage to his wife.
He lives been living in bed sit for a year unable too afford a flat, on top of that while he was married his wife was cheating on him and to top it off his wife was the one that wanted a divorce.
From what i understand he never cheated on his wife, which got me thinking about how crap men really have it.

That's awful, while i don't think men are oppressed on a daily basis, this seriously needs to change asap

good call. I'd also make sure I had quick access to bear arms.

I like your thinking; dunno how much they'll help unless you want a fluffy bum scratcher?

In answer to the original post, no, I don't think men as a gender are oppressed. There are, beyond doubt, individuals who are oppressed but that's not the same thing. A mens rights movement is simply not necessary in the same way that a womens rights movement was necessary - whether it still remains as relevant is another question.

As for the suicide statistics - I think it's a rather dubious extrapolation being used here to draw any definitive links between the alleged oppression and rates of suicide. Not that they can't be linked but it would appear to be a much more complex situation than that simple link allows for.

Men are oppressed by these types of discourse, not by women and gay rights groups. Oh noes, we have been privileged enough to be the dominant group for millenia, but now women are saying we aren't nice! That's like saying the nazis were oppressed because everyone ganged up on them. I won't go into the inherent flaws built into feminist groups, but let's just say you don't have to worry about them becoming the norm.

Real oppression for men comes from other men. "man that's gay", or "man up" are the types of comments dropped on the daily that tell you you aren't a man unless you behave a certain way or shag a particular type of person, and it goes much deeper than that. So well done OP for oppressing the people you want to protect.

Slightly off topic but it would be interesting to find out what percentage of people who committed suicide where on antidepressants ... i for one think antidepressants are a scam and are actually dangerous and are a leading contributer to suicide.

The problem is that people on anti-depressents are already diagnosed as severely depressed and therefore already in a higher risk group. You would need to compare them against severely depressed people that are not getting treatment and see what the rates are between those two groups. There are probably some pretty strong ethical issues with that sort of study.

That would be interesting , however antidepressants are not just given to people with depression , people with anxiety disorder , people who suffer from panic attacks and people who have social anxiety , ocd and other type of mental illnesses ...

the recent shootings in america (sandy hook ) , adam lanza was on antidepressants .

A quick google and i just discovered something mind blowing

http://www.ssristories.com/index.php?p=school

just looking at that and its mind blowing that all those people involved with school shootings and antidepressants.
