My current car (52 fiesta 1.4tdci) is on it's last legs.

What should I be looking at as a replacement?

I commute 25 miles each way to work, averaging about 15,000 miles a year.

I'm not after anything fancy or particularly sporty, just reliable.

Depends how you found the Fiesta doing that 50 mile round trip. Most would pick a Mondeo sized car for such a task.

But natural upgrade form Fiesta would be Focus. But then it's probably worth looking at Mondeo's for the extra space and gadgets

I find the fiesta perfectly acceptable for the driving that I do. Also the fact that it cost £35 a year in tax and a tank of fuel lasted about two weeks is appealing.

Everyone should buy a Focus ST! ;)

If you find the Fiesta acceptable, then just look for a newer one then. I'd personally want a Mondeo, but if you aren't too fussed, you'll get a much newer Fiesta for your budget. The tricky part is picking Diesel or Petrol, as 15k is borderline petrol/diesel territory.

I'm sure you could probably find a fully kitted Titanium in your budget, should be more refined than your 52 plate current Fiesta

I've had a look at some online, around the ~30k mile mark for ~£8k. Not sure if of their specs though.

Is this a sensible choice? When I bought my current car it was my first car, it had done 90k and I paid £2k or so for it so don't have much experience buying cars

I probably wouldn't define splashing £8-9k on a fiesta as sensible no.

So does a Focus ST*

I highly doubt that is a real world figure...

No quoted MPG figures are, whats your point?

The book figure for the diesel is 78mpg - is that a real world figure do you think? The point is its only 15mpg difference (20%), regardless of how real world the figures are, they're likely to only be about 20% different. Not worth it. We're not talking about performance cars here (no doubt someone will be along to suggest a 370z soon enough), just modern small petrols.

I wouldnt want to spend 9k on a fiesta myself, I'd have something bigger but the new ones do seem quite good for the money. I'd probably spend closer to 7 if possible on one thats done a bit more depreication already though
