Microsoft and Sky are offering free Microsoft Points as an incentive to get more people to sign up for the latter's Now TV streaming video service.

If you sign up for a free 30-day trial through Now TV's special Xbox site, you'll get 800 Microsoft Points added to your Xbox Live account.
If you then decide to continue after those 30 days and pay £8.99 for another month's access, you'll be credited with another 1600 Points for a total of 2400 Points.

For those unfamiliar with it, Now TV is Sky's equivalent to Lovefilm and Netflix, offering streaming movies on demand through various Xbox 360, PC and iOS apps. While it's more expensive than its competitors (£8.99 for the first three months then £15 a month afterwards), that premium cost does mean many of its films are more recent, roughly in line with the Sky Movies selection.

You need to be a new Now TV member to take advantage of the offer, so if you've already tried it out you're out of luck. You can find all the details on Now TV's Xbox site - if nothing else it's worth doing the free trial to get your free 800 Points, as long as you remember to cancel before the 30 days run out. You'll need to watch at least 90 minutes' worth of video during that 30 days for it to count.

Well balls, I already tried it last month.

Not a bad service, but the few movies I tried didn't have 5.1 audio available which was disappointing, and because of the awkward way the 360 outputs audio, I simply got no sound through my rear speakers at all.

As stated in the terms and conditions you will not recieve your Microsoft points until up to a month after the free trial has finished.

If you start your free trial today 10/01/13 your free trial will end on 10/02/13 and you will recieve your voucher for your points in the mail by the 10/03/13.

Quite a wait but worth it for free points. Just tried streaming a movie on my laptop, the quality is atrocious. Hope it looks better via 360 so I can actual use the trial to watch something.

If they did not do 5.1 why would you get anything from the rears? How do you mean about the awkward sound output?

Will give this a trial for the points at least but can't see my keeping it.

The Dolby light comes on but there is nothing coming out of the rears. Visual and audio quality is terrible though...

Just signed up for points but doubt I'll keep it...

Um, scam alarms going off here:

VOUCHER APPLIED

You will be charged £8.90 for this service for the first 1 month(s) and £8.99 for each month thereafter.

Says this on the last page of sign up where you have to put your bank details in and put the XBOXOFFER code in. Hardly a FREE trial then if they charge your card £8.90 for the 1st month is it!

>Closes page.

And I wonder how "easy" it is to opt out once you have signed up and handed your bank details over, let me guess, something like you must write to us wishing to unsubscribe no less then 28 days blah blah blah.

No thanks.

I'm just about to submit, but mine's saying this

"ORDER SUMMARY
Sky Movies Pass - FREE 30 DAY TRIAL

VOUCHER APPLIED
You will be charged £8.90 for this service for the first 1 month(s) and £8.99 for each month thereafter. Remove"

Surely that means I will be charged £8.90 as soon as I hit submit?

edit: as above

Also, anyone else read the "legal bit" that is at the bottom on the main page at : http://www.nowtv.com/xbox
Microsoft Points Offer: New customers using NOW TV on the Xbox 360 as one of their two allowed devices during the 30 day free trial. 800 Microsoft Points for new customers when signing up for a Free Trial at nowtv.com/xbox. You must watch at least 90 minutes of content during your Free Trial to receive the Microsoft Points. Offer not available in conjunction with any other Points/Cashback/Voucher offer. Additional 1600 Microsoft Points if you remain a subscriber at the end of your Free Trial. All Microsoft Points to be sent within 30 days at the end of the free trial. Microsoft Points terms apply. Offer ends January 31, 2013.
Ask our live chat team a question

Gets better and better, you have to watch 1.5 hours of content and maybe you have to sign up ON the console, not through a PC to get the points.

All seems way too good to be true to me, its never as simple as hey, click here and were give you 800 points. (just make sure you read the 20 pages of terms and conditions in font size 1 to actually find out what you have to do to get the free gift!)

And an extra 1600 points after 1st payment

"You will receive 800 points for signing up to a 30 day free trial, and a further 1600 points when you make your first monthly payment."

Would be a real crazy offer to let you sign up, cancel without even using the service lol

They want you to a)forget to cancel or b)use and like the service and keep it.

Can't see anywhere that says that, and the official MS email detailing the offer has a link to click on to sign up.

Just going by what it says in the 'legal bit', not really sure what it means. After all, you'd go through the whole thing, sign up, cancel in 30 days but then never receive your points next month cos you didnt meet their T+C's.

= Waste of time.

So, anyone found any info in black and white about how you actually unsubscribe within the 30 days 'properly' and still get your 800 points for free?

I stupidly forgot to add the code on signup but the lovely people on their live chat sorted that out and the points will be coming to me now.

They are sent out when your trial ends.

Now, back to Toy Story 3!

In case anyone was worried about the payment query raised earlier once you sign up it tells you:

10 January 2013 Subscription Purchase:

Sky Movies Pass - FREE 30 DAY TRIAL - Sky Movies Pass (There is no charge due to a free period. Note that you will be charged £8.90 on 09 February 2013) (Your subscription cost has been discounted by 1%) £0.00

This information has been sent to your registered email address ***.

I spoke to an advisor on their website earlier who told me that the 3 users with separate gold accounts in our house could sign up and get the offer. Pretty good if it turns out that way. Saved the convo in case!
