MPs call for '32% salary increase'

Well when we start having an urgent shortage of MPs they can raise the salary to attract new ones from other industries.

That is precisely what is needed, as to retain the best candidates you need to be competitive with the alternatives, otherwise you simply get the chaff.

I'm so shocked that some of you think this is OK and the fact nobody mentioned performance pay. Maybe then politicians would actually do something, other than lie. After all, they do say we're in this together. HeeHaw. ¬_¬

I'd quite happily pay them 100k plus expenses, if there was half of the amount of MPs.

There's simply too many of them, doing absolutely nothing, earning too much money.

They are underpaid when compared to other industries and positions with equal responsibility.

Try looking at the number of people who try and become candidates in safe seats. They aren't short of them at all meaning they don't need higher wages to attract people to the job.

Do you not work where they pay you the best for your talents? Or are one of those people that have undying loyalty for their company?

Well i dont work where I'd be paid the most. There's a lot of value in waking up and not wishing that you didnt have to go to work. I actually miss work if im off for any long period. Make of that as you will. I view the post of mp in a similar light and for those that want to do the job.

The point castiel was making (which i disagree with) was that you dont want any old mps you want the brightest minds in the country and to get them you need to offer comparable wages to what they'd get elsewhere. Why i disagree is that i dont feel you want the greatest minds but those with the greatest desire to represent the people and make a positive contribution to their country whilst having sufficient intellect to do the job required. These sort of people will not be motivated by money but more a sense of duty. Let's face it 60k+ and a rather large expenses budget isnt a bad salary in the grand scheme of things. So it's easily enough for those people to live. One thing I'd like to see is a better mix of people in parliament but i feel that's an entirely different topic for another thread.

So are most of the senior management in the civil service and those with transferable qualifications (Lawyers, Accountants etc).

Also MPs can supplement their income by doing other roles on the side (e.g. David Miliband & Sunderland), plus ministers receive extra from the departments they work in, plus there is the expenses issue.

I think if MPs publicly called for that sort of increase there would be an outrage.

Government isnt supposed to be a business. And how would performance pay work? The more new laws you get passed the more you get paid? Parliment is basically a law factory?

Youd think after 300 years of churning out laws they might have figured things out by now? Nope there's still consumers out there eager to buy westminster's products.
