Microsoft Research show off "Illumiroom"

It may look pretty good on a big white wall or projector screen but I hate the idea of it projecting on to objects in the room which makes it look awful.

Looks good to watch but I imagine it might be a little offputting to play.
I like the idea, but I guess that its more that it reminds me what Gadget Show did. Once I think of that, this seems superfluous or as Shami said possibly offputting (Id imagine visual periphery would be overloaded/distracted).

Not seeing it myself. A gimmick, like 3D, dual/triple screens etc. I'm content with a high res screen for the next decade myself. :)

This is cool but I have a projector... Why would I use a TV and projector in the same room, why not just use the projector? I realise you get this immersive effect with to focal points but it doesn't do it for me yet. I look forward to trying it for myself though.

Gimmicky but no doubt I'd enjoy. I have one of those Philips LED projector things and I have it behind my TV. Sometimes I change the colour to suit what I'm playing, like Skyrim I had it as a real ice blue on the walls and Mass Effect usually red or dark blue.
I find lighting very stimulating and it enhances things a lot for me when it's right.

Um Living Colors LED light I think, yes it's spelt MURICAN way. I'm not sure I can link to certain sites but the jungle site has lots. Come in various sizes, I have a mini which is perfect but does require you to get up to change colour. The massive one has remote :)
About £40 for my one, £100 for biggie, not sure how good micro is.

I think that would seriously hurt my eyes after a while tbh. Especially if there is lots of flashing around the TV.

Personally I would just prefer to get a projector :p

Cool idea though.

Main problem is games have to specifically designed for it to make the really cool features useful - sounds like a lot of hassle for developers for little end reward. Guess MS first parties would push it but they arent really making games most hardcore gamers want anyway. Is Kinect just used to map the room and thats it? Be interesting to see how a Kinect game and illumiroom would work together - could be very immersive...

Potentially something that would make me buy the next xbox though for sure, though Id need a better gaming room to make it work first!

A bit of a gimmick for me, but it has a load of potential.

+1

If they keep it as peripheral vision, then it could be something that feels very natural quite quick. The moment you have to aim at something that's hovering over the fireplace, that's not good.

I'm keen to see where this goes but it's probably something you have to try for yourself.

Just can't see how this is going to be "mainstream" with the cost of the thing. Kinect + projector, that'll be 500+ then surely?
