I've been spoiled recently, my work machine since July has been one of the 15" retina MacBook Pros. The display is incredible and has really sold me on the idea of super-high resolutions. My 24" 1080p monitor on my gaming rig has been ruined for me, it looks absolute crap in comparison. I'm wondering if there's any panels under 27" that can handle 1440p? For me higher pixel density is more important than getting something larger than my 24".

A quick google didn't find anything, but I wondered if there were any upcoming models that any of you know about?

Hi,

Not sure for upcoming models but you do some research on 27" Yamakasi catleap 120hz, Overlords computers or DGM 27" ips-2701WPH.
I hope this will help. ;)

Yeah, I've considered the 27" Korean IPS screens and I am tempted, but 1440p at 24" would be perfect for me. I may hold out and see if any get announced.

Really? I've used a few 27" 1440p monitors and text certainly didn't seem that small.

Id say that 1440p needs to be on 27" or larger. Any smaller and eye strain is a real possibility.

I use a 24" 1080p and a 27" 1440p and I definitely find that the 1440p screen is more straining on the eyes until you get used to it.

Well, I find 1080p on a 15" display to be perfectly usable, which has a pixel density of ~147ppi while a 1440p 27" is ~109ppi, so I think there's the potential for smaller 1440p displays, IMO. It looks like manufacturers disagree though, so I may look more seriously at picking up a 27".

But your viewing distance to a laptop screen is much much closer then a PC monitor...

If you're not in any hurry to buy a new monitor, there have been some 4k (i.e. 3840 x 2160) 32" monitors announced recently. I would assume that it's only a matter of time until we start to see smaller monitors with that sort of DPI. You may have to settle for a 2560 x 1440 27" monitor in the mean time, as it could be a number of years until these high DPI monitors are affordable.

That's what I think I'll do, buy a 27" now and wait for HiDPI become a little more standard. If there's one thing using the retina MBP has taught me it's that HiDPI is definitely coming, I may just need to wait a while.
