*** 2013 Weight Loss Thread with Recipes ***

I don't believe in diets as such rather calorie counting e.g. my target weight loss per week is 1lb which gives me a total of 1800 calories a day. So I just make sure I don't go over this. However I can add calories by doing exercise. A 30 min run will give me an extra 400 calories

In for the long haul here.

My home scales cannot weigh me so no starting weight yet :(

Diet wise I'm sticking to what I've had most sucess with which is typically a low carb diet:

Breakfast: 2 x rashers back bacon (grilled), 2 eggs scrambled (in butter), glass of milk

Snack: Chicken - either pre-cooked pieces from the chiller, slices or satay sticks

Lunch: Pack of Pastrami, 50g of cheddar - pickled onions and the occasional pickled egg

Snack: Moar CHICKEN!

Dinner: Usually some form of grilled meat (chicken/pork typically) with lots of veggies (carrots/brocolli/beans/baby corn etc) or curry without rice.

Typically under 2000 calories a day and no desire to eat more.

Complemented with Stronglifts 5x5 and a mixture of steady state rowing (5km), HIIT rowing and light weight complexes.

For fluid intake I'm looking at roughly 4 litres a day!

What are the recommended snack foods for weight loss ? I was having fruit and 'emergency' cereal bars but both pretty high in sugar.

Main meals I'm generally ok with but it is the in-between.

I'm aiming for about 1500 kcal a day.

Eat less per meal and spread them out to avoid snacking. You want to plan your diet so you know exactly what and when you eat. If you leave these decisions till you're hungry you will more than likely eat the first thing you see.

I lost half a stone in 16 days on 1200 cals doing this.

Completely agree with above. I'm on about 1200 a day, cut it right down and I am living on chicken salads, soups, fruit etc. portions are cut down as well, as this is a big thing for me, I can eat way past full.

I don't completely agree with going as low as 1200 calories a day.

If you are a bit peckish, try something like blueberries or weight watchers do crackers which I have a bit of peanut butter on.

Don't starve yourself chaps, just eat well.

1200kcals is way to low for any guy, for a woman acceptable maybe! men shouldnt really be dropping below 1600kcals.

If you are on 1200 your weight loss will quickly stall out !

Ok I accept that I do not know how much you weigh or your height etc...

but 1200 cals a day? Bear in mind that just staying alive number of calories is roughly around your BMR. That doesn't take into consideration any activity or movement or exertion. Sure, dip below that your body will still go on by digesting itself. However, just be careful - low calories normally means your body wants to hold onto fat more. More fat = slower metabolism and slower metabolism = propensity to store fat, and all the other effects such as lethargy, and other psychological and hormonal aspects to consider.

Also, it shouldn't really be a diet just a sustainable way of eating healthily, in my opinion anyway.

If its a considered a diet its easy to slip back into what's not considered a diet once you lose the weight.

Ease into eating well and adjust it slightly to either result in loss or to maintain.

Something like that anyway.

I do agree, and know. I will sort myself out...

I'm back on the bike doing 15km a day come monday, so I'll have to up it regardless, or I shall die.

EDIT: I'm 5'10 and 13st12 - not that that means 1200 is acceptable, I know :)

I eat perhaps 1500 - 1600 matey and i'm 220 pounds.
I burn 800 calories some days running and doing stuff at the gyms so if feel tired or exhausted i up my calories a bit.

I went as low as 1000/ 1100 calories for a few days but couldn't operate.

1600 is working for me though lost thirty six pounds since October.

Starting 5:2 tomorrow, previously cut down my calories and started eating properly a few months back and lost a stone and a half (started out at 280lbs, dropped to 260lbs). Slipped a bit over Christmas and want a proper regime to carry on, so I'm going to give 5:2 a try with my friend who likes the idea of trying to keep me motivated.

Target is eventually 240lbs. I aim for it to take me until September 2013 @ 2lbs/week, so I'll see how it goes.

Week 0: 95.5kg (15st 1lb)
Week 1: 93.4kg (14st 10lb)
Target: 80kg

2.1kg loss

First week weight loss is a little rapid. I am still tweaking the diet here and there, but is it typical to lose more at the start from water or something, or should i be upping the calories a little?

Hi all

I have been trying to shift some weight since October by tracking my weight everyday and counting my calories using myfitnesspal - lost about 11 lbs so far

Was: 198.4 lbs
Now: 187.6 lbs
Target: 159.0 lbs

Got 1490 cal's per day. Had days where I have finished with 200 cal's remaining, but I end up feeling really tired and drained if I do that too offen :(

Currently I 'gain' about 250 cal's back from walking from the train station to work and back again. Planning on going to a Zumba class every Wednesday too as of this week

Seemed to have stalled since the start of this month and keep flitting between 187.0 and 187.8 (ish) - doing my head in!!

Any tips on how to kick start the loosing again?

Depends what the diet is mate, is low carb you most likely will lose some water quickly at first. However how many Kcals are you on?

Thats quite low calories!!! Especially if your having 200 left some days, what are your stats?

Well the 200 left on some days is when I am being really militant - i try and make sure I have 100 or less left at the end of the day tbh or bang on my target of 1490 per day

Height: 5ft 5"
Weight: 187.8 (as of this morning)
Loose per week: 1lb (approx)

I just seemed to have stalled in my loss tho :(

The bf has given me an intensive to work to. If I am 175lb or less on my birthday (at the beginning of April) then he will gift me £500 to spend on what ever I want! At this rate though, that is not happening :( :(

Monday 14th

Target Weight - 10st 7lb

Last Monday - 11st 11lb
Current Weight - 11st 9lb
Loss = 2lb

I'm actually surprised at losing 2lb as i did cheat a few times this week on the remnants of Christmas food etc. and not being able to exercise as I've got this annoying cough that's aggravated every time I move :(

But losing 2lb when I set myself a goal of 1lb makes me :) Just need to behave myself now!
