120hz on a laptop

I have an Alienware M17x r2 which has VGA, HDMI and Displayport.

It has the duel 4870m's in crossfire.

I really want to hook up a 120hz monitor, specifically one of the BenQ XL2411T's that OCUK stock.

I'm wondering how am I going to get 120hz out of this, would a Displayport to Duel Link DVI adapter (active, has the extra usb cable for power) work?

I really need an answer before I go about ordering all of this kit.

Thanks OCUK.

It 'might' work, but I doubt you'll get a categorical 'yes' from anyone unless someone happens to have tried it and made it work. I suspect - but am not 100% sure - that you'd need an active DP to DL-DVI converter, and these are always on the expensive side.

Are you really dead set on the BenQ? Would you consider another 120Hz screen that has a DisplayPort input?

I don't really see the benefit though. Majority of the laptop won't enough graphic or CPU grunt for pushing 120fps...hell, they would struggle to even do consistence 60fps with half decent settings.

I'm not trying to be some wise-guy here, but for my 120Hz monitor, I find it difficult to push for consistent 100-120fps even with my i5 2500K overclocked to 4.6GHz, and overclocked 5850 (already with some graphic settings turned down in games). To get decent graphic quality at the higher frame rate, I think I myself would ideally need to upgrade to a 7950. In laptop terms though, it would mean you would need ideally "at least" a Mobile IvyBridge Quad-core with boost, and a 7970M/GTX675MX or above...

I just hope you won't end up disappointed after spending around £200 on the monitor, only to find your laptop is not benefiting from it.

I play counterstrike 1.6
CS 1.6 and 120Hz monitor sound awesome beyond words :p

But I think you should do some research in advance on if the game is compatable with 120Hz...I mean for Left4Dead2 (which is already quite a bit newer than CS 1.6), I would have to set refresh rate to 120 in the launch option of game in Steam to get 120Hz working with the game.

Your best bet would be the newer 120hz monitors from samsung.

Samsung S23A750D or Samsung S23A950D.

Both come with display port and are aimed at AMD cards (tridef etc).

The benq is aimed more at Nvidia 3D Vision, and IMO is a poorer monitor for something like CS 1.6.

Not sure if the benq will do native 120hz whilst playing 2d CS 1.6 with your card (Should do tbh).

Pretty sure the sammys would.

Hope this helps

The Samsung 750D and 950D do indeed support DisplayPort, but:
(1) There are many reports of the DP connection being buggy (luck of the draw)
(2) Those screens have quite higher measured input lag compared to the BenQ. SInce the OP wants to play CS I'm guessing he's a competitive FPS player and so wants a screen with the lowest input lag possible
(3) OP, I can't think of 120Hz monitors with DP other than the Samsung. Sorry

Honestly, this is so silly, why can't some company make a 120hz monitor that will work with a laptop dp.

I can't exactly take a 15kg-20kg of pc on the train with me everytime i want to travel to play CS or w/e

rage.

Hmmm, I would need a definitive response.

The BenQ xL2420t would be perfect, I have played with this monitor before, it's the bees knees.

However, will not be ordering unless I know for sure it works, contact benq i suppose.
