Input lag on 2560 x 1440 monitors

Hi all, getting myself a little confused (for a change)

I understand the difference between input lag and response time. I've had a problem with my newly delivered DGM monitor and while waiting for it to be collected, am decided whether I want to get another model or not. I play online MMO's such as Lotro and do a lot of group raids.

I currently have a Dell Ultrasharp 2407WFP which has a response time of 6 ms typical (Grey to Grey) / 16 ms typical (Black to White), the DGM has a quoted response time of 6ms Grey to Grey which is the same as the Dell.

I'm happy with the input lag of my Dell, but it being an older model, I cant find what the input lag is, so I don't know how it compares to the newer larger monitors.

The DGM is quoted as 28ms

The Asus PB278Q has an input lag of 16.6 but that is still class 2. Its response time is listed as 5ms Grey to grey.

The Dell U2713HM has an 8ms grey to grey and input lag of 22.2ms

I read a thread recommending the HP Zr2740w for gaming. But this has double the response time of 12ms grey to grey but has an input lag of just 3.6ms hence is class 1. But the review conclusion of it on TFT central seemed to imply the Dell U2713HM or the Asus PB278Q were the better choice.

And the more I read about it the more confused I get. If I knew what the input lag on my 24" was, then I would be happy to have the same. Or maybe I'm worrying too much about it and it won't make that much difference to most gamers?

Would I gain anything by getting one of the above models over the DGM?

any advice appreciated.

Thanks

Concerning input lag the 2407WFP has over 2 frames @ 60Hz (>32ms) so you should find the DGM fine as well in that regard. What kind of frame rate were you able to sustain when you were using the DGM on your favourite games?

Many thanks, that's put my mind at rest.

Haven't tested it much, I simply took it out the box, plugged it in, ran the dead pixel test, found about 16 (one bright white noticeable on all colours, rest only noticeable on black), loaded up lotro to see what the chat text boxes looked like, and packed it away and phoned up for a replacement. Only had it for about 30 mins before it was boxed up again.

I have a 4GB GTX 670 so it should play fairly well

Looking at the reviews, it looks like I've just been unlucky, knowing the input lag of my Dell, I think I'll be very happy with my replacement DGM, if I'm not (more dead pixels) then I'll have to look at spending a little more on another brand which I don't want to do at the moment

Thanks for your help

Except the Asus PB278Q isn't IPS, it's PLS

And yeah, it's quick. I found no problems whatsoever with mine.

I did however find the DGM a bit laggy on BF3. I can't be 100% sure it was the monitor's fault however as most other games ran pretty smoothly.

I am playing a lot of Borderlands 2, Guild Wars 2 and also Torchlight 2 (basically, anything ending with "2" :) ) on my DGM at the moment and I don't notice any lag. I think some people might be more sensitive to it than others.

Thanks all

Those that own both the DGM and the Asus (or Dell) do you think the extra cots of the Asus (or Dell) is worth it?

OC spec for the Asus says it is an IPS?

Not that I'm bothered which type of screen it is as long as it looks great.

About £120 more for the Asus which also gives me on site warranty rather than return to base. But if there's little if any difference between the DGM and the known brands, I'll stick with the DGM

Owned both the DGM and the Asus and the Asus was well worth the extra IMO.

The build quality is so much better and the factory presets in the Asus are probably the best I've ever seen.

I have seen the Asus referred to as IPS in some places but it is 100% PLS. PLS is Samsung's "version" of IPS. I say version but it is to all intents and purposes a different technology.

Many thanks, I'm tempted to spend the extra now.

Then I read in another thread

I've just ordered the U2713HM from OcUK tonight, will be here Friday so can let you know. It was a tossup between that and the Asus but the Asus isn't as good for gaming I read.

I realise this is down to peoples preference to a large point.

wow, what a nice monitor.

I never thought the coating on my dell was noticeable, but side by side the Asus is 10 times clearer.

Very very happy I got this
