Hi, when everyones pick themselves up off the floor from laughing to hard ;)

Current system specs are
Nvidia gts250
dual core pentium E5400 @2.7
3gb ram

looking at upgrading but can't afford CPU and GFX in one hit, system is in man cave and will be used for a bit of gaming (skyrim, diablo 3, starcraft 2, and new GTA when it's out) movie playback via 42" 3d TV so needs to output sound via hdmi (not sure if they all do now anyway) will be getting a blueray drive, and general surfing.

Monitor will also be TV so max res 1080, unless i can be convinced a monitor is a good idea LOL.

Thanks
Simon

Give us a budget, and we'll give you some options :)

What motherboard do you currently have? It might be an option for you to stay on the 775 socket and buy a used Core 2 Quad if the motherboard supports it, and some more RAM + a decent GPU to match.

You could make about £30 back on the GTS250 and £15 - £20 back on the E5400 if you stick them on a well known auction site.

Then you will be set untill you can afford to upgrade the core system (CPU + motherboard etcetera) to a more up-to-date socket type.

We would also need to know the make and model of your PSU to make sure that nothing we recommend will overload it, and to ensure that your current PSU has the appropriate power connectors.

hi

pc was an emachine so not sure on mobo, it does have a pci express slot, psu is a ATX P4 500watt affair, looking at spending circa 200 on gpu and 350 on cpu, mobo, memory, think i may have to spend 100 or so on psu, but was hoping i could do it over 6 months.

spec i was thinking ati 7850 or 7950 for gpu and an i5 for cpu.

Okay thinking cpu, mobo, mem first then gfx in 6 months or sooner LOL

What do people think of this lot and do heat sinks still come with cpu's

or this page >>>

(and they are factory overclocked too).

edit: just noticed those are both the same pages but I posted two different pages, anyway, you can click from section to section
section yourself, know what I mean ?

8GB of RAM is enough for gaming. If you want the same RAM then you can save some money by going for the kit below.

YOUR BASKET
1 x GeIL Black Dragon 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C11 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (GD38GB1600C11DC) £35.99
Total : £39.90 (includes shipping : £3.26).

I'd looked at the cheaper of the i5 ones £339.98inc but the sata locations concerned me, with the current setup i'm running you can only access 1 of the 4 sata slots as GPU blocks them off, even with angled sata leads, like the other one though :D

just got this package
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-111-OE&groupid=43&catid=2384&subcat=

not going to be running a GPU and just 1 HDD and 1 DVD drive at the mo is my power supply up to it.

If it's a generic no name psu I would personally look at changing it. Something like this would be a good choice, and it would give you some headroom should you wish to add a graphics card later on.

YOUR BASKET
1 x XFX Pro 550W Core Edition '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply £49.99
Total : £60.49 (includes shipping : £8.75).

Yea mate, dont waste your money on a rubbish PSU, unless it has a good warrranty, apart from that your litrally throwing your money away, to me the starting point of a good system is a good or half decent PSU, and they aint cheap either, but if you wanna go cheap then its cool, try and get one with a full warranty that lasts a few years.

cheers mate :)

YOUR BASKET
1 x Corsair Builder Series CX 430W V2 '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply (CP-9020046-UK) £36.98
1 x Patriot Viper "Black Mamba" Generation 3 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (PV38G160C9K) £35.99
1 x **B Grade** Gigabyte Z68AP-D3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 (MB-364-GI) £35.00
1 x BitFenix Merc Beta Gaming Case - Black £29.99
1 x Intel Celeron G530 2.40GHz Socket LGA 1155 Processor - Retail £28.99
Total : £181.06 (includes shipping : £11.75).

Heres what I'd recommend. had 2 of these boards from OCUK, both been fine. the cost of this setup is only slightly more than a new good gaming CPU, and is significantly better than your current setup.

That way, you could also sell your whole pc minus the graphics card, even if you get £80 back from said well known auction site, thats half of a 2500k paid for. I've used this basic spec for a few friends budget gaming pc's, albeit with varying B grade motherboards. No IO shield however, but this has never bothered them, and they are only £6 on the auction site.
EDIT: just seen your budget, well, if you can afford this spec now, id recommend it, as I've built PC's over time before and 50% of the time the projects never get finished.
anyways, Ill post an alternative spec to match your budget. with a 2500k, however, in that current spec, youd be looking at 340, nearly 300 less than you were looking to pay.

Update: Here is a spec to match your budget of £650ish, comes in at £672, has a lot of upgrade potential, comes with an i7 CPU, a decent gpu and 8gb of quad channel ram. This would be ideal if you plan to keep your pc for a few years, as being socket 2011, it is still being supported by nvidia and currently supports 6 core CPU's. being more powerful, it should last longer. Here it is:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i7-3820 3.60GHz (Sandybridge-E) Socket LGA2011 Processor - Retail £229.99
1 x MSI X79MA-GD45 Intel X79 (Socket 2011) DDR3 Micro-ATX Motherboard £152.99
1 x MSI HD 7850 OC 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Cards £119.99
1 x Corsair 2013 Edition Gamer Series GS 600W '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply (CP-9020063-UK) £64.99
1 x Kingston HyperX Genesis 8GB (4x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual/Quad Channel Kit (KHX1600C9D3K4/8GX) £59.99
1 x Cooler Master Hyper 612S CPU Cooler (Socket 775 / 1155 / 1156 / 1366 / 2011 / AM2 / AM2+ / AM3 / FM1 / FM2) £32.99
Total : £672.94 (includes shipping : £10.00).

Get a new PSU mate, I wouldn't trust your current one powering that new gear.

That's the kind of PSU you see in old Pentium 4 pre-build machines, I had one not too dissimilar (may even have been that exact PSU) litterally catch fire when powering a Pentium D and a GT240. (no I am not joking, it scared me ****less) there may have been something wrong with it, but thats just my two cents. They are not designed to run modern hardware.
