Hi Gents

My sister came over at xmas and was playing with me iPad and said she would like something similar, she has learning difficulties so doesn't work but will save up (with help from family) for whatever I recommend.

Now I think an iPad is way out of her budget, so what are the other options, big screen as her eyesight isn't brilliant, android is fine and I can load games and bits on for her.

Something with expandable memory and with a built in camera would be fantastic as she loves to take photos here and there. No real budget in mind so £100 to £200 perhaps?

Many thanks

Mart ;)

I would have said the Acer Iconia A210, but it doesn't have a rear camera. But if she likes taking pictures, a cheap digital camera (with an optical lens) will be miles better than a tablet anyway and some even come with things like wi-fi/bluetooth for easy sharing with things like a tablet.

That's an option but I'd like it bundled with the tablet to keep things as simple for her as possible really

I'd have said refurbished iPad but even those don't come close to budget. It's a shame though because there are a lot of decent apps for iOS that suit people with learning difficulties. That would swing it for me personally.

Yes and she was navigating round mine without any issues, maybe a second hand iPad2 16gb?

Checked to see if she can get anything under government schemes?

I know a few people who said they got stuff but never did any research into it.

I think she'd probably have a better experience due to UI standardisation in iOS (back placement for example) which is much more strictly forced than the Android standard. It makes learning to use it from scratch a lot easier for those who are experiencing Mobile based OSes for the first time.

Oooh bad example, the back button is always in the same place on Android tablets :D
OK then cheeky, if you could explain why in apps back can either mean "back out of this app" or "back up a menu in heirarcy" or "back a page" or "back the keyboard out"? Why does G-Talk have back in the top left on phones and through a button response?

It's getting better but honestly, you can't argue it's a uniform experience really can you? There are upsides and downsides to enforcing guidelines such as this, power users will naturally prefer more choice but for the majority of people who just do basic stuff on their phone, a consistent experience is what they will prefer.

Android has "back" "home" and what I can only describe as it's version of "winkey+tab" on everything since ICS, in either floating on screen on dedicated buttons... I prefer this more than either onscreen + 1 button to rule them all.

Ah got ya, so it's not the 'placement' you mean, rather non-uniform function?

Anyway, back to topic. I think that seen ass as though Mart's sister has become familiar with his iPad, a second hand\refurb iPad 2 would be the best bet... Or even a mini, the screen size is smaller, but the text\look of it doesn't feel small at all.

Thanks Guys

I got my missus one of them for Xmas (hence the recommendation) and she loves it. It gets used for browsing, puzzle games, Facebook and eBooks.

It also has Jelly Bean now, so if you do get one, update it before handing it over as it completely changes the UI (from standard ICS tablet layout to the JB "phablet" layout).

Sounds good to me, yes will upgrade prior to passing it over so she doesn't get confused half way through
