University Applications 2013

Hi

I'm thinking about applying for the access to success starter courses , has anyone done this ?

I'm new to OU and want to get my confidence up in learning again.

I think I meet the criteria for this path so it seems a good way to start with the low costs and all?

Has anyone got any advice

thanks

I'm doing an Access to HE course is that the same?

not sure , I got an email about it , basically its 2 steps ,the first step costs £25 and you can choose from a selection of starter courses after completion you can go onto step 2 which costs £50.

its seems a good low cost way of getting me into learning again , I was just wondering if anyone on here has done it.

the first step modules are-

Introducing environment (Y181)
Making sense of the arts (Y180)
Starting with law (Y186)
Starting with maths (Y182)
Starting with psychology (Y183)
Understanding children and young people (Y176)
Understanding health (Y178)
Understanding management (Y179)
Understanding society (Y177)

not much interesting there but they may be a good way to get me back into learning and gaining my confidence

Dunno what you guys are on about, i just turned up to uni giving no prior notice and ended up with a degree.

Good luck to all those applying, my only advice for whatever it is worth is that if you don't get into your first choice it's not necessarily the end of the world and remember there is also clearing in case you don't get what you want.

I did appallingly in my A levels so missed my entry requirements by a fair whack.

In the end I went through clearing and ended up at the same uni (as mental as it sounds I was more interested in going to that particular uni than I was fussed on what course to do) on a different course which in hindsight was much better for me than my original choice, so all ended well ;)

Computer Science

Had offers from

1. Bath Bsc with year in industry
2. Manchester Bsc
3. Loughborough Bsc

Got an interview from Bristol (masters) and haven't heard a thing from Edinburgh (Bsc 2nd year entry), but they say they may not reply until March :)

Got the last 3 of my Jan exams tomorrow, then I can relax for a bit! Been a hectic week :o

AS levels count to UCAS points unless stated otherwise. This could be AS-levels from the first or second year. They may outline specific subjects they want to see, perhaps as a minimum of one or two specific subjects to AS or A2 level. General Studies is not recognised as contributing by pretty much all universities.

Got quite lucky when I applied. My backup had higher grade requirements than my first choice (didn't want to put the backup first and get the grades since then i'd be forced to go there).

Got an acceptance letter from my first choice in the morning and was absolutely over the moon. Went into school to get my grades and found out that I had actually missed my offer by one grade (8 marks >_<) but they sent the acceptance anyway :D

Thinking of doing a parttime degree with Napier in Edinburgh BEng Computer Security and Forensics, starting in September. Depends if work will allow me away for lectures and shizzle.

Edit been working fulltime for 8 years was 2005 when I left school.

Applied for Economics at:

St. John's Cambridge
Bath
Durham
Warwick
Nottingham.

Been rejected from St. John's after interview, apparently they are only taking 4 applicants this year instead of around 14. I have an offer from Bath and the rest are yet to say anything.

I applied for International Management/Business Administration/Whatever else they call it these days.

Applied to (in order of preference)

Manchester
Leeds
Nottingham
Leicester
Bath

All of the main universities. Will see what happens :) I'm quite old too, so dealing with a bunch of 18 year olds will leave a lot to be desired.

Got an offer from Manchester, Nottingham and leicester.
Leeds is an interview (will turn into an offer no doubt)
Bath is still pending, and it's my insurance choice.

Out of curiosity, why did you apply for the MSci (or MComp?) at Bristol, but not the others? Either way, you can usually transfer to the MSci after the first year of the BSc as long as you average over a 2:1.

Sent off ages ago but I'll post anyway.

Oxford: Economics and Management: Interview and AAA Offer
Bristol: Economics and Management: A*AA Offer
Aston: Economics and Management: AAB Offer
Kent: Economics: ABB Offer (This is probably second choice for me, and they offered a day after I sent off UCAS which was a really welcome bit of news haha)
UCL: Economics with a year abroad: Pending
