Because he's going to play games that performs better when more VRAM is available. It's pretty much standard these days for 2GB VRAM to be the minimum amount when purchasing a GPU, it's practically recommended.
 
Wes speaks the truth in 99% of cases, but now and then, a compromise needs to be met. For instance, the OP's friends budget may be strict and therefore not allowing such spenditure and another factor could be the possibility of a bottleneck from his old CPU (of which we don't know what it is).

He may still be on a dual core or even a P4/Athlon X2 etc. A 2GB 7850 could be a big waste if this is the case (so would a 1GB though).
