Lance Armstrong charges

That's the thing that bugs me most. On Oprah and all the news they keep using the word cheat. Now I don't claim to be any kind of expert on how PEDs work with cyclists but if anything he'll have been training harder when using them than when not. They seem to think it's just a ticket to couch surf and win.

All the biggest men in the world are on drugs. All the strongest men in the world are on drugs. The fastest a few decades ago were on drugs. Why is it so astonishing for the masses that the fastest people today are on drugs?

They used the word cheat because he was a cheat, because he used PEDs. The same PEDs others took without medical guidance and ended up dying.

Guys here saying LA is just a scapegoat... seriously people are you freaking kidding me?

Yes he is a scape goat, he's guilty like the rest of them but he has been singled out for extra punishment not because he was the worst offender but because he was the best and most successful. The difference in his treatment and that of the likes of Hincapie is staggering old George rode with Lance on all his tour wins, doped with Lance on all his tour wins and but for the fact Lance was better than him might have won the tour while doping.

Treat them all the same they all degraded the sport so letting some off with slaps on the wrist while throwing the book at a single individual is stupid. It doesn't server the sport, it makes all the other cheats crimes look lesser and like there was only one true cheat which we all know is garbage.

Personally I'd be happy never to see or hear from anyone in that generation of cycling again either on a bike, on TV or in a book.

I wish people would stop making excuses for Armstrong.

If everyone was cheating, he's still a cheat. Not only that but he lied constantly to protect himself and others while ruining plenty of people's lives along the way. There is a very good reason why he has been singled out here.

The apologists aren't quite as vociferous as a few months ago, but remember before you open up that the bloke was a total *******, verging on a sociopath.

Edit: to sum it up, this isn't just a bloke that cheated to win a bike race, this is a bloke who cheated and systematically threatened, intimidated and silenced people who dared to tell what, as we expected, was the truth.

No he didn't. He was caught, proved, and booted out. Admitting it after being proved guilty isn't really the same thing :p

Or is it just a cancer joke? Are we making them now?

Just finished watching the first part of the interview.

It was very interesting how he didn't really feel he was doing anything wrong at the time and that he didn't think they would be caught. That to me shows how much everybody was doing it during that period in order to be able to win, of course it in no way excuses him. As has already been pointed out, as the biggest and most successful he was naturally going to draw more attention.

Its hard to say, without seeing the final part, but it looks like he is hinting at wanting to now be involved in the cleaning up of cycling, with his comments about being ready if he was called up. Its probably in part down to the fact that in all honesty, I do believe that he loves cycling, he wouldn't have been doing it otherwise. The second half of that equation is that he likely wants to change his image somewhat. As things stand, he goes down in history as one of the biggest cheats in sport; by being involved in cleaning it up, he can at least change something about what gets written in the history books.

Of course though, Cycling has done a lot on the cheating front already. Ultimately if he does get involved, it should be about shaking up the UCI, which would be a good thing.

It was certainly interesting to hear his response about the payments he made to the UCI anyway. Apparently they were just short of some cash.

That approach might win him back some fans.
david Millar, for example, is a fairly popular rider having done the same.

ha really?

After watching some of his interview, i can see where hes coming from when he has the win at all costs desire to win, but the thing is, if he could go back in time, knowing now that he would get caught 10 years down the line, i bet he would do it all again.

I suppose it depends on what the actual outcome of it all is. If the UCI let him off the hook and he's allowed back to racing (hello, Alberto Contador) and nothing changes and he doesn't have to give any of his prize money back, then I don't doubt that he'd do it again. If, however, he is banned from cycling, triathlons, shot put, egg and spoon race and Monopoly, and they dismantle the UCI and rebuild it, and they use him to implicate and take down the other offenders, and they take back the money, then no... he probably might give it a second thought.
