The "New Gear/Willy Waving" thread

When people post those mega close insects are they using extension tubes on this lens as well?

Yes, as Ksanti says. They are using extension tubes and/or cropping. This lens is so sharp that heavily cropping isn't a problem.

I looked at the 65mm MP-E but it's very specialist, I don't think I'm that in to shooting tiny insects to give up how versatile the 100mm L is. It's much more a versatile lens. It's essentially a fast 100mm image stabilised prime, with a minimum focus distance of 30cm.

It's so refreshing to not be limited by the minimum focus distance. I'm going to really enjoy this lens. I've already planned where I'm going at the weekend to stretch its legs. :)

just cropping on that, that was with the old D80 and a sigma 150mm f2.8, really need to get that lens on my new 5D mkii

I loved the sigma 150 F2.8 on my old 5D mk ii. Having OS is a massive bonus though since using my 105mm F2.8 nikon VR lens instead. Wouldn't go back to using a none VR macro lens!

Well I said a while back I would love a Billingham Bag and so using some Christmas money I picked one up for myself :D

First impressions is the build quality is insanely good and with some careful packing I can get a fair amount of gear in there (7d+lens, two primes and a wide angle with room in the pockets for tablet and filters etc). I also love how easy it is to completely remove the camera insert, it makes a fairly nice shoulder bag and wouldn't look out of place worn with a suit! All in all a very happy bunny with this and I imagine it will last me a fair amount of time too!

I got myself that same exact bag a few days ago and I concur about the build quality. Beautifully crafted bag, though I only carry a Fujifilm X-E1 with the zoom lens inside it as I also use the bag for my Uni books. It is perfect for what I am using it for and I am not surprised that you can fit so much in it.

It's also nice that it doesn't attract attention as an obvious camera bag.

Anyway pictures:

This bag looks great. Can I ask how much you paid for it?

The price is just under £165 on the rainforest site... I had 50 quid of vouchers for them though so paid £115 or so. Yeh it's fairly expensive but I think for the build quality alone it's worth it and reckon it will be the sort of thing that will outlive my camera body etc.

Ah thanks I have the 100mm L which I got because I wanted to try and learn to do some macro. I had seen some of the pictures of jumping spiders etc on various sites and after trying out the 100mm was curious how they got so much magnification.

See I said it three times and nothing happened. Besides competitor hinting is equally as bad an offence. :p

The eye detail is amazing! Makes me think of fine kevlar...

Monitors count right? :)

Dell U2713HM. Currently uncalibrated though as a friend has borrowed my probe and he's at work + nobody else at home it would seem.

I'm so shocked how to this day we don't have ultra thin bezels. I'd love to see a computer display where the screen is right near the edge. I'm also shocked at the lack of 16:10 screens.

Don't get me wrong, that display looks stunning but I would have thought in 2012/13 screen bezels would be really thin by now. Even my display from 2005 is more or less the same thickness.

Interesting that, "Features a color gamut of more than 99-percent sRGB" mine is sitting 96% after calibration. I think I'm badly needing a new screen. How hot does the display get with it being LED backlight? as my Dell 2405FPW can whack out a fair bit of heat with brightness 1 - 2%.

The 16:9 on these 27" screens doesn't bother me because of the 1440px vertical resolution :) Any other screen less than that and I'd not touch it! This AR makes watching TV and movies immense though and with the bonus of the 1440 for browsing/editing on. Not to mention the extra width FOV in games.

Heat wise there's little heat. I've sold the Hazro now and that actually heated up the air around it because it's all aluminium and CCFL backlit but these LED ones don't seem to warm up much at all. Brightness is at a constant 21 and 25% for both.

My 3008wfp was literally like a heater so the power consumption must have been very high. Kind of miss it now in the winter.
My thunderbolt display stays cool to the touch.

Interesting! Have you played any Battlefield 3 on it?

Mine doesn't at all with 50% brightness.

On a 2405? no heat at all, yeah right. All those years ago on google everyone spoke of how hot the display was. And everyone spoke of how burning the image was to their eyes even with 5% brightness let alone 50%.

Not yet, funny story but I uninstalled BF3 a few days before I made the decision I wanted a new monitor :/
