Lifetime spend on buying cars

Hello,

Just reading a thread in GD about regretting purchases and a few people have claimed 6 figure plus spends on cars over several years. It seems the regret comes several years later when they realise that they could be close to mortgage free instead.

Made me wonder what other people have spent on buying cars? I owned my first car 12 years ago and have spent a total of around £13,000 buying cars.

(Merc, 2 BMWs and Audi in there so not all rubbish but all at least 5 years old when I bought them).

Thanks

£1150 on cars in 14 years of driving

£350 on a 205 that I never drove, £800 on Rover turbo (6yrs) and £9k on an S2000 (6.5yrs).

Since passing my test back in 1990, I have only spent around £24k on 5 cars.

Opel Manta GTE - £1k
Vauxhall Calibra Turbo - £7.5k
Rover 420 - £500
Ford Fiesta - £5k
Ford C-Max £10k

:)

if you can afford an expensive house and car does it really matter what people have spent?

its more upsetting when you work it all out and think you could have done something better with the money..

i do feel like their is something wrong with peoples heads when they've spent money like 100K over the years but still live with their parents, seems a bit weird.

Total spend is 235k over 14 year however it has not cost me that much as its the same money going around and around again.

It's more interesting to know how much people have lost over a lifetime

I've not spent much if you account t for the return I've got on the cars I've owned. In about 9 years and an easy 15+ cars I would say overall spend (purchase plus finance cost if applicable less resale) to be about £8k. About 4k of that probably went.on my a3 which I bought overpriced on a stupid rate - live and learn n all that

If you're only talking actual spend on purchase then its more like £25k (and about to go up by another 7) The majority of.that before I bought a house

Hmm

Cinquecento - £200
Megane - £2300
Accord - £3900 ( I think)
MX5 - £1900
Mondeo - £6750

£15050

Could be worse, I could have bought a brand new Fiesta or something for the same amount!

Edit: I spent 3k+ on the MX5 as well if we're counting modifications

If we are talking just the original purchase prices then it's only about 4k in 8 years.

However in that time i've also spent £3700 on a paintjob alone, the total is probably well over £10k.

Hmm. Quite interesting though. I've spent £48,390 over seven years on 32 cars (based on purchase prices). On the plus side, I've made all of that back - along with a decent profit as well - when the time's come to sell the car on.

So, can't complain.

Hmm, savings have gone up alongside spend, so I'm not too worried about it.

Likewise, threads like this can only go one way too.

Some (many) would and have slated me for some silly car purchasing decisions. However, in the 11 years I've been driving I've become a homeowner, built up a decent equity, put money aside in savings and increased my salary to well above average.

I could regret the mistakes I've made but I've enjoyed the cars I've owned and I've tried to enjoy spending money in other ways - holidays and the like.

I dare say I'm financially better off than a lot of the people who have questioned or slated my decisions in the past - both here and in person

What an awful thread. Why would you crazy people want to talk about a subject like this? :-(
Why not ?

It's only high level anyway and will vary where priorities lie. I spend nothing on cars now as a % compared to 10 yrs ago

Hmmmm,

VW Polo 1.3 CL, bought by my parents
Seat Toledo 1.8 SE, £4,000
Skoda Fabia VRS, £11000 ish
Seat Leon FR TFSI, £16500 ish
Volvo S60 D5 SE, £8000
Mercedes SLK 250CDI, £8268 for the 2 year, 30k lease

Roughly £48,000 spent, I've had about £26500 back so a spend of £21500 on depreciation over 10 years and roughly £500 on interest (loan for part of the Leon).
