I'm trying to find a decent all-in-one Home Theatre sound system WITHOUT a blu-ray player - ie. Amp and 5.1 speakers as a set - but my google skills are failing me as I don't know what they are called.

Secondary to that - and I realise that 'all-in-ones' aren't particularly popular here - I saw the Yamaha set recommended in another thread at Richer Sounds - any other recommendations in the <£300 bracket?

Finally... I have no issues with 2nd hand - I would be happy to go with an older amp (as long as it did HDMI pass through and could take at least 7.1 speakers) and some fleabay specials for last gen speakers if anyone could recommend a good combo - I saw Diamond 8s being recommended and they would work a treat if I could just add more in future?

5.1 Home Cinema Receiver / Speaker Package.

A good brand to look for is Onkyo - I got the 3405 from Best Buy when it was closing down and am very happy with it, the current closest to that is

Onkyo HT-S3505

I just did this in the other thread and although the OP has pointed out he already knew about the yamaha one I dont think its possible to get better atm

The amp I am lead to believe is the same as the yahama RV-v373 which is still selling around the place for £200 if not more. for £250 you get 5 speakers with the package and can always upgrade the fronts in the future if you wanted.

Yep - it was your thread that got me thinking - I was previously looking to just stick some PC surround speakers straight into my Xonar card. That package is pretty sweet.

Am I right in thinking that 5.1 is the max that that Yamaha can ever aspire too?

fyi there is very little 7.1 media around. could probably count on one hand through number of films I've watched that actually have a 7.1 soundtrack.

It's always that balance between getting the standard now and looking to the future - If I do decide to get a decent amp I'd envisage having it for the next 5 years at least - hence 3D and 7.1 seem like a no brainer.

well I've had a 7.1 system for the best part of ten years, and as I've said, i can count the number of times I've actually had a film with a 7.1 soundtrack on one hand. i can't see that changing anytime soon either.

6 speakers (5.1) is difficult enough to blend in the home environment, adding 2 more speakers isn't going to make it any easier or sit well with the majority of homeowners.

Fair enough - I just assumed that as time went on they would move more towards cinema set ups with more speakers (especially adding units in the vertical plain to offer proper 3D sound)
