Hi there,

I'm looking to build a complete new system from scratch, due to owning a laptop for the past 5 years. The PC is going to be mainly used for gaming (FPS and RTS games). The top end of my budget is £3k, I've already bought the edifier speakers.

So far this is what I have come up with and would appreciate any advice on it.

change sdd and hdd, m/b and cpu, all for faster ones, have taken out speakers as you already have them, so inc them and still under budget

haven't altered case kb or mouse and mouse mat or paste or sound card either, but altered psu as extra not needed unless you are going to crossfire them later etc

you picked a i7 3930K 3.50GHz with Cores: 4 - Threads: 8 on a (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor etc, i changed to i7-3820 3.60GHz (Sandybridge-E) Socket LGA2011 Processor with - 4 Core - 8 Threads

changed motherboard also to support newer chipset Multi-GPU: Supports NVIDIA® 3-Way SLI™ and AMD® Quad-GPU CrossFireX™ Technology / cpu and ram (32gb installed) with extra ram fittted you can make a ram drive of 10gb lets say and make you apps fly. way quicker than solid state

mother board supports 64gb ram so could add more and still be under budget, changed win 7 home to pro as it supports more ram etc

windows 7 home 16gb max win 7 pro 192gb max

No processor? CF 7970 with a 650w PSU? It's gold rated, but give it room to breathe!

Swap RAM for Samsung Green, 850w PSU, I'd change the mobo personally, go with 7950s and get better screens. Take off one of the SSDs and replace it with mass storage, 1 or 2TB HDD.

lol, 6:15, little too early to be speccing I think.

Waste of money IMHO. 3k on a gaming rig that wont play games any better than a £500 machine because nothing is optimised anyways for PC gaming!

Save your hard earned money and spend 1K max! Then buy a fast car, fast bike or fast woman!

Indeed a 120hz monitor makes sense for FPS games. I also prefer Nvidia graphics, but I guess that is personal choice. Don't go Sli/Crossfire if you want to play games on release day without issue. Hell, even with one card you sometimes don't find things work perfectly as it is. If you're playing the same game a year down the line and finding it a little choppy then an extra card can make sense, but a single very fast card is usually more desirable in the first place.

You need no more than 16gb ram. 8gb is plenty for most people, even 4 would be fine in a lot of situations. Windows Home is also fine, and there are very few people that even use the extra features of the Pro Edition never mind the Ultimate Edition.

At this price point there is no reason to not go for Sandybridge-E, 2011 will be a relevant socket for longer than 1155 with Hassy just round the corner.

*edit* I see you are going for SB-E now :)
