Howdo all,

Heading to Tokyo in April to see a friend who is out there. Looking mainly to stay in and around the Tokyo area. Shall be there for 11 nights.

Anyone got any suggestions of things to do and see?

I'm hoping I can find the underground drifting scene ;)

Well firstly a Suica card is useful for getting around the Tokyo area, it doesn't save you any money (you charge it up and then your fare is deducted from the balance when you go through station gates) but it means you are not having to use ticket machines all the time and ending up with loads of change. You can also use them on the myriad of private lines in the Tokyo area (they are interchangable with their PASMO card). Getting one is pretty trivial using a vending machine at a station (which has an English option).

What to do depends on what sort of things you are interested in ...

Normal site-seeing, the Sky Tree and Tokyo Tower ... with the former it tends to be best to go very early to avoid the queues. You have places like the Meiji Shrine, the Edo Museum and the museums at Ueno Park as well as areas like Asakusa which are good for a wander around.

If you are interested in anime/manga then you have Akihabara and Nakano Broadway. For electronics the same (you can lose a lot of time in Yodobashi Camera by Akihabara station if you are not careful :))

If you are more fashionable then Shibuya and Harajuku may be more your scene.

Of course depending on budget you could also pick up a 7 day Japan Rail Pass voucher before you go and convert it when you get there (I changed mine at the travel centre at Tokyo station who were very helpful, spoke English and booked our train tickets for us). Then you could go down to Kyoto/Osaka for the day (it's about 2:30-3:00 hours to get there) where the former has a lot of historical things to see. The round trip should almost pay for the pass and you can use it on the JR lines in Tokyo as well.

(mutter want to go back again but probably can't this year :()

edit: Of course if you are there in April then I would suggest checking out the cherry blossom at Ueno park or Shinjuku Gyoen.

true dat

as for things to do it really does depend what your in to, tokyo has everything and anything and many things you never even thought of.

your mate will probably know the best cheap places near them for fun nights.

if you do ever get bored just pick a direction and walk and see what you stumble across, always surprise's me how many shrines and temples dot tokyo and the interesting little things you find down back street's be it shop's or someones odd idea of house decoration.

Going with the wife and some friends.

Mixed bag of activities really. So yes, arcades are allowed :D

I plan on visiting the Subaru dealership out there as it looks massive and full of tuner bits.

Site seeing would be great too, good food, some places to drink, anything fun really.

Liking the suggestions so far :)

oh dear

apart from the phone on public transport and the knife thing the rest is total bs. sounds like she's been browbeaten by her Japanese husband to conform and fit in.

if yoru in to cars take a trip to ikeburkuro and have a look at toyota's auto salon and while your there you can get lost in sunshine 60 building.

if you like pizza go to a shakeys for your lunch as its 800 yen (or was) for a all you can eat pizza buffet :P

Not quite sure I'm going to fear an attack from China whilst in Japan....

But hey, if I get captured by them, I speak Mandarin, so maybe I can get my food orders right :D

Bump, looking at going in March. Diffo have to go the Tokyo Disneyland and Gundam World, might give Hello Kitty World a miss though :p

Anyone know any good tours in an around Tokyo? Don't really want to got elsewhere, do that next time.

Tours? ... no ... search for the other threads on here about going to Tokyo for more suggestions of places to go and the extensive public transport system is pretty use to get around on ...

The studio Ghibli museum was awesome, really interesting if you have any interest in animation and film. Akihabara district was great for a wonder round if you're into gadgets and electronics, and harajuku on a Sunday is an experience with all the cos-players.

I went up the sunshine building which gives you stunning views on a clear day, and all the parks are beautiful in April with the cherry blossom tress.

Karaoke is also highly recommended ;)

I did, this was the only one really. Not much else.

I know it has a great transport, I went ages ago but wanted some recommends on things to do. Personally I could spend days just wondering around looking at the buildings but other people might not find that too exciting. ;)

And then there's Repunggi for bars! No idea where to go there.
