so is there any law regarding the old term "job and knock" or as some may know it "task and finish"

I work for a large logistics company 4pm until 10pm are my contracted hours. Due to the weather on Friday all of our fleet drivers finished around 2pm. a good 2 hours before their contracted hours. as did a lot of office staff go home early because of the weather (and the fact that there wasn't any real workload)

We had finished all our work by 8pm, but when we asked as a shift if we coudl go home we were told "I can find you some wagons to sweep, or dock your pay the appropriate amount if you leave early"

Is this fair? Not in my eyes, when we all turned up on time worked hard and yet everyone else has gone early with no loss of pay.

so my question is, do I have anything to stand on in terms of this? Should I put a grievance in for treated unfairly? or should I just stay quiet and bite my lip?

It's harsh, but I can't really see that you've got any case.

If the company had sent you home for health and safety reasons you could have argued the point.

If it were exactly the same conditions as earlier in the day (which it probably wasn't on friday as the morning/lunchtime was the worst of the weather) then you could complain you were treated unfairly compared to the earlier shift, I don't think there'd be much to back you up though. I assume the actual situation was that it was a different manager who let them go early?

yes the operations manager let the others go and called the shots earlier on.

yet we were told by the supervisor we couldn't go early and if we did we would loose pay. He was the most senior on site.

thanks for your replies. I'm not moaning about working my hours, I'm moaning about being somewhat un-fairly having one rule for others, and another for our shift.

Job & jack has it's downsides.

Here the other bit of where I work goes home early when their workload is low, however when it's high they then get asked to stay to make up the time.

If it's your contracted hours you're not really going to have an argument.

Just find something to do to get you ahead for tomorrow or else just doss about on the companies time.

Tough really, it's managers descretion.
One of our team works 8-4.30pm, the rest of us start at 9. On occasion he will finish work at 4.30 and we will be able to leave not long after because there isn't much on. It's unfortunate for the early person as they have had to work a full shift, but that's life and he accepts that he won't get to be lucky like that himself unless he changes his shift pattern.

yeah I suppose.

Its just going to be that me and 90% of the shift will never stay over when its busy to help them out with the supervisors attitude  lol

I worked years ago in logistics for an evening shift. If we all knuckled down and finished early as the drivers had to come back early we were also rewarded with going home early. Logistics are time constrained so the sooner those artic's were loaded and out on the road the better for all.

We did get the few supervisors who denied us, but thankfully they never lasted, more then a few months.

Sounds like a harsh supervisor to me but not much you can do.
