Dell 2713H (not HM)

As someone who uses the screen predominantly for photography I would have thought the 99% ARGB coverage was worth paying for, especially when you see the price of similar spec EIZO and NEC monitors.

Unless Im missing something

Has anyone pulled the trigger and bought one yet?

For someone not using the screen for photography (gaming + general / office work), is the U2713H an overspec (waste of money)?

It depends how much you like strongly saturated and vibrant colours. Although things will undoubtedly change in the future, sRGB is the current standard that most games and movies are written for. I'm currently reviewing this model and trying to describe the differences between viewing sRGB game and movie content in sRGB and Adobe RGB.

The U2713HM is probably a more cost effective and suitable option, unless you specifically want or need any of the advanced features (wide gamut, 10-bit support, hardware calibration, card reader)

OK, now I'm a bit confused. I have a 5830 hd graphics card which has both dual dvi and display port connections. This would allow for the full resolution. However I think that lightroom 4 (which I use) only supports 8 bit colour. So will I not be able to use the full capacity of this screen?

I was almost ready to buy one as well as its on offer.

Thanks

The U2713H uses 8-bit natively and through the connections. It then does additional processing on top. So you will be able to use the full capabilities on Lightroom 4. :)

True 10-bit end to end workflows are still very rare and expensive so don't worry about that too much. The addition of the added FRC stage at the panel side (8-bit + FRC) should help with transformations of the colours as well, helping to preserve tonal values, grey scales and ensure smoother gradients :)

Thanks guys, great responses. I was getting in bit of a tangle over that, its only as strong as the weakest link as they say.

Anticipated flow is Canon 7D - Lightroom 4 - HD 5830 - Dell 2713H

I did read somewhere that display port would be preferable over Dual DVI, is that real or just one of those things people get hung up on?

The idea is that I can use adobe RGB through out. Its still bit of a kicker that I have to buy a specific color monitor, but seeing as I don't have one already its not to bad.

DisplayPort will handle the bandwidth required for a 10-bit workflow if you have the other links in the chain so yes, use that if you can

There's not that many modern screens with a wide gamut support (since many are W-LED backlit now), which you need if you want to work in the AdobeRGB space but the U2713H is certainly an affordable option, and a decent screen to boot :)
