Where to Honeymoon?

OK so I'm getting married in May and my fiancee and I are yet to decide on where to go for our honeymoon. She is a teacher, which under normal circumstances would limit our options due to the price of going away in school holidays. She is however only covering maternity currently and will be finishing the placement the week before we get married. As a result in my opinion we should look to do long haul as it's something we may not get another chance to do, given it should be cheaper during term time and sprogs won't be too far off following our marriage (all things being good!).

Neither of us are the biggest of sun gods and both love sightseeing and exploring ruins etc. She is really fussy when it comes to hygene and food. At the moment she has her heart set on spending a fortnight travelling through Italy, but I'm less enthusiastic about the idea. For me we can go to Italy as any summer hol in the future.

I'm at a loss for what to suggest, but Italy really doesn't push my buttons and as I said I would like long haul.

So I open it up to my dear OcUkers. Find my honeymoon destination and the sell to my fiancee :)

We will have been together 10 years by the time we get married, constructive arguments and minors spats is the lifeblood of our relationship :) we never really fall out properly though.
 
For a relaxing honeymoon - Mauritius, Paradise Cove resort, go all inclusive. Don't make the mistake we made, actually leave the resort as often as possible. Grand Bay is nice, the rum stills are awesome, the hotel will be able to sort you out with a driver/minder for the day for not much money. They have fishing and boat excursions, I booked the wife into the spa for the day and myself sea fishing one afternoon \o/

Definitely go long haul, this may be your only chance, especially if you're limited by school holidays, budget and kids! As you say, Italy is easily manageable from England so wouldn't feel like a 'once in a lifetime' trip.

I too am planning a honeymoon, and the two places at the top of my list are the Maldives and Malaysia (Pangkor Laut Resort in particular), but if neither of you are a fan of the sun then they're probably not your cup of tea.

If you enjoy exploring ruins, then the Angkor temples in Cambodia have to be way up the list. I found them absolutely fascinating. If she's fussy about food/hygiene you may struggle to convince her on that one There are some very fancy places in Siam Reap though as it's a big tourist attraction.

If you don't like the sun, how about some kind of cruise through the Norwegian Fjords? Or maybe renting a Winnebago an going around the Rockies in Canada?
 
If I ever get married I am having my honeymoon in Borabora in those Hut/chalet things they have on stilts out on the reef.
Doris can go where she likes if she don't fancy it. :p
Like this but they have some isolated ones.

That was top of my list until I looked at the flights. They cost more than most people's honeymoon and it's 30+ hours! You need 2 stop over locations in both directions! By the time you get there it would be time to come back again :D
 
Budget?

I'd recommend Hawaii. Perfect weather, good restaurants, lots of nice beaches, very good hygiene and plenty of places to explore (volcanoes, rain forests, etc.). It's a loooong flight but worth it.
 
Id Second Hawaii, break it up with a stop in San Francisco or Vegas and the flights aren't that bad

We did that for 10 days then DC on the way home too , Maui is just WOW
 
Appreciate all the comments, I think I sold Hawaii to her last night. Just need to look at prices now and see whether it's feasible or not.
 
For our honeymoon we are thinking of doing 1 week adventure (Safari) and 1 week R&R (Maldives) but actually Bora Bora looks good from that pic. Ideally want the house on stilts and own personal chef one night ;)

Alternatives we had were... going to Japan or Canada, as those are both places we want to go, but they weren't really 'honeymoony'.

Otherwise there are all of the theme parks in America... something else I would want to do again or a Cruise maybe.
