I have resorted to placing my Sapphire Dual X HD 7970 into the second PCIe slot on my motherboard because it would randomly disconnect from the 1st slot (causing loss of video and system responsiveness) due to its weight. The card is always secured into the PCIe brackets via two screws. The SATA cables is what keeps the card from drooping down and detaching from the 2nd PCIe port as you can see in the pic below. Is this a fault in my motherboard's PCIe retention clips or can this possibly happen if the weight of the card is this much?

The first picture is of the retention clips for the 1st and 2nd PCIe slot. It looks like they would be effective at keeping the card from coming up and out of the slot, but not keeping the pins from slightly drooping down and losing connectivity like the retention clip on the 3rd PCIe slot would.

I've heard of it happening before, it did strike me as a heavy piece of kit. I have similar card and it does droop but my msi mobo has been ok but I think I will look at getting something like the following but it may not extend enough.

Could think about supporting it from top of case by creating a sling with something non conductive, perhaps loop around the power connectors as they're at the droop end.

I used to run a GTX260 with an Nforce 590SLI mobo, it never ever fell of despite the exact same clips HOWEVER due to the placement of the chipset fan it was 100% impossible to get any sort of tool or finger in to release the clip, eventually ending in my having to snap the clip and use a tripod from a camera to take the weight, worked well :D.

One problem I have had with stuff falling off due to weight is CPU fan, bracket snapped, came crashing down lol.

I also can't imagine that the constant weight on the SATA sockets will be good for there health in the long term.

If it's lifting out of the slot it is because your case/card is poor in regard to the angle of the PCIex slot to the case mounting backplate.

If it requires force to get the screws in, investigate and maybe mod the mounting bracket....a metal bracket with 2 screws will overcome a plastic clip every time ;)

Your clips look really weak ... my actual slot extends a short distance like this. Why they would only put a decent strength slot on your 3rd slot I will never know ...
I sort of figured that too. Looking at various other motherboards, they seem to have more robust looking clips then mines.

my card sags at one end....quite a lot, this is supposed to cause the card to fail.

jack up the far end to the pc base with a suitable length of rod, i use a transparent Bic Biro, you cant see it and just use transparent sealer to hold it in place

The clip in your third photo looks removable

Did they ship stronger clip on bits in the motherboard box?
Interesting, when I come from school I'll try and see if the clip is removable and can be placed on another clip. I know for sure that my motherboard doesn't have any extra retention pieces.

Your clips are part of the pcie slot...I told you what the problem is !

Clip the card in place first then check alignment of the mounting bracket.

The alignment of the mounting bracket is perfectly straight.

If it's all good and straight a little inventiveness with additional support should sort you out ;)

A heavy card is always going to eventually damage the slot without some kind of support as you found out, You said the card was riding out of the slot originally

Support really needs to be on the back corner furthest from the motherboard and mounting, even a length of string to the top of the case will be better than nothing.
