'Shoulda pirated it': when the consumer gets screwed - your experiences.

Omaeka, remember AGES ago, like three posts up, you posted that big DON'T FEED THE TROLL picture? Was that for a specific reason, or did you just like the colours?

Nope, that meme is a joke as was my reply.

I'm not feeding him as I'm not being serious nor am I getting offended. I'm humoring him to garner more replies and thus, more funnies.

Oxy is funny, end of story.

oh this thread is funny xD "hipsters don't play CoD", true... but because they have macs and no PCs :p

but more on topic, I just remembered another game where anti piracy got the better of me for ages, well.... maybe not anti piracy but something was a miss.

C&C Tiberian Sun! Was so excited for this game when it came out. Remember dragging my dad into town and to electronics boutique (i think.... may have been somewhere else) getting it and traveling home, not being able to wait to play it.

Got home, Installed it fine, no problem! Go to play the damn game,.... whole different story. I would try and load up the game but it wouldn't find the cd in the cd drive..... (checking to load content/legit copy). If I remember correctly it was something to do with a directx drive (not driver), like... my cd drive was a directx drive or not.... or something.... and it would just never load it up.

Game goes in box, few years later, newer computer, retry C&C:TS... install playing.... no problem xD

Haven't pirated a game in a long time, mainly because services like steam have made legit ownership more appealing. A lot of older console ports run 100x better via an emulator than their actual PC ports. Generally games that require internet connections for single player or LAN get pirated as they offer inferior user experience to the pirated versions (i.e Starcraft 2, minecraft).

Im currently open to the idea of pirating the next thing iD software release as in my mind they own me money for the garbage that was Doom 3 BFG edition :P

Mine was with Bioshock, I used my cd key in the activation tool and it told me I had an invalid key, tried it again and it said I had reached my activation limit.

I sent an e-mail off to customer support and didn't get a reply for about a week, when I did it was to tell my that this happened because I had an invalid key :o

I sent another e-mail asking for a new cd key, but then decided to download a no-cd patch. I don't think I even got a reply to my second e-mail tbh.

I don't remember having ever pirated a game, I've had downloaded a few No-CD cracks for games I own though.
I seem to remember the KOTOR games worked better with No-CD cracks that removed the DRM.

Now, since I queued up to feed the Oxy/troll (a kindred spirit if you believe my friends)...
Saying new games are clones of olds games is a bit much, I'd say influenced by is closer. I could say I've not seen the film Avatar, but I've heard it's a re-telling of the Pocahontas story. I've got friends that have seen it and I've been watching films for around 25 years, so I'm going to say it's a rubbish film and never watch it. Might ok though...

It's really hard to find truly original things these days, cars for example, do you own one? Was it the first car ever made or is it a 'clone' and therefore rubbish and something you wont buy until it's completely original?
How about a house? Is your house/flat/etc. original or does it use the same concept of having a floor a few walls and a roof as the houses of olden times?
Thinking about it, breathing, that's hardly original is it? Bet you don't plan to give that up though?

What's so wonderful about old games anyway? Just being old doesn't make them special. It's not 'classic' just because it's old. There are probably plenty of original old games that were rubbish, so originality isn't a guarantee of something being good. Sometimes I think the latest iterations of games take the controls and other systems a bit too far, but there are other times that adding a bit more can make things better.
For example remember Doom, well actually that wasn't original so you probably didn't play it, how about the original Wolfenstien 3D (or was there something before that?)? That was quite nice, but then if you consider something unoriginal like Half-Life 2 (I know you probably didn't play it, but you may have heard of it), the addition of different types of weapon and being able to jump, duck, look around and have environments that had layers that overlapped itself, I think those additions were for the better. Now not every version of Fifa or CoD will introduce something new, but maybe someday one of them will, or something will copy them and add something new. Maybe that will be worth playing?

Well i had the same experience as Omeaka with this as discussed on Steam, but my god... this has to be one of the worst console ports to date for me. Is it really that hard for devs to include vital on/off options for major graphic techniques they use in their games. I know some devs that do this in all their games, console port or not, but it should be a standard thing for console ports on a PC!

On the bright-side though, i found a fix that seemed to work for me after hours of Googling. Using a program to force it to borderless windowed mode seem to boosted performance a lot.

Feel free to phone the internet police but I maybe pay for 1 in 10 games, why?

Most games released over the past 2-3 years are a complete joke, dumbed down crap designed for consoles, ported to PC's.

Most games I play for a few hours and just uninstall and delete, for games I like I tend to have a shop around for second hand or digital sales like steam.

You can almost say I pirate things so it's like a demo, i'm sure others do the same.

I loved metro 2033, pirated it then bought it.
Skyrim same, big release, lots of revenue from it so who knows if bethesda was just going to milk the cash cow and release crap, was wrong so bought it off steam.

Pretty much EVERY indie game I have bought, straight out because I support small time developers, I would rather give £10 to a small time company than feed the mouths of EA whom keep released trash after trash.

/rant :D

I used to pirate stuff, for no other reason than i didnt have the money but wanted to play the game. It was wrongHowever i got fed up with the poor releases, having touse nocd keys, frequent crashes i stopped PC gaming for a while.

Then about a year ago i got back into it, now buy things cheap on steam and the experience is a whole lot better.

If they make it easier or at least as easy to buy music, games, films as it is to pirate then people will move to legitimate gaming.
There does need to be more demos though. I went through a phase of hiring wii games on lovefilm and knew within 10 minutes or so wether i liked it or not.

Time to find out if the new 7950 is capable of running this EXTREME game that we know as Dead Rising 2... LOL.

EDIT: Nope, runs even worse than my 6850 did! We have officially found the single worst console port of all time!

Still a good game though, **** port or not. :p

Have a feeling its a AMD gpu issue, and the game is fine for Nvidia users as i just found a lets play of TB playing it on hes youtube channel, he uses a Nvidia card. /grumble.

My old card. **** knows what is wrong with the game tbh. 6:30 in, you'll see an area that absolutely kills my performance, it is even cheeky enough to use 90% GPU. Best part is, these issues existed in Dead Rising 2 but somehow were fixable by disabling Depth of Field OR keeping it on and changing the .exe's name to RE5D9 or dirt2, but the developers have actually disabled the ability to do either of those now, its absolutely pathetic. :/

It is Nvidia biased though isn't it? That'd explain why they stopped ATI users getting around it after people found fixes the first time.

GFWLWL. Made the mistake of buying Dead Rising 2 and Off the Record during the Xmas sales. As a fan of the franchise having played them to death on the 360 I jumped at the chance to buy the PC version.

Bugger me worra mess. Previous experiences with GWLFLFL were bad. Getting Fallout 3 running a few years ago resulted in days of wasted time, and then a similar issue with New Vegas iirc.

So, Dead Rising 2/OtR crashed to desktop the moment they were launched, even though I had the GFLWL client installed. Hours later, the steam forums came to the rescue with a 'fix' involving modifying ini files, copying some MS files off the net - oh and setting my Windows sound output to 16bit 44khz ffs.

After all that I had just lost the will to live, let alone play. Oh and GWLFL still looks as crap on the UI front as it did years ago aka sweet FA has changed on the UI.

Steam DRM'd games have never given me issues really, same goes for uPlay with the Assassins Creed games. I have just recently reinstalled Sims 3 (yes I am that bored) and purchased a retail DLC pack and the end result was a smooth install with a cdkey.

Pretty rare I've had major problems in this regard.

Code of Honor 2: Conspiracy Island I got from GMG but it would always crash loading the first level, had to use a cracked exe.

GTA4 had some sort of horrendous system where I needed to log in to GFWL and Rockstar Social club and god knows what other nonsense, basically I couldn't get it to work until I reinstalled GFWL using a downloaded version rather than the one supplied with the game, something like that.

Splinter Cell: Conviction has an idiotic system that pauses the game if it loses connection to Ubi servers but then automatically continues the game when the connection is restored.... no great if I've gone to investigate the problem with the internet! Really annoying on a crap internet connection like mine as even downloading on Steam overloads it to the extent that SC:C would lose connection.

Bioshock 2. Bought it off Steam and struggled hours to get it to work. Ended up grabbing it from Piratebay and had it up and running in a minute.

It wasn't the first time pirates offered me better service than a commercial corporation.

TBH i have not felt the need to pirate games since moving back to PC games.(mainly due to steam sales)
However things like Uplay requiring an internet connection to play games, GFWL being an utterly useless concept and occasional issues with steam offline mode deciding it wants to go online as its forgoton my logon details are starting to push me toward buying keys and downloading illegaly. (remaining in the right in my mind but still illegal in the eyes of the law unless you want to argue that forcing me to use poor DRM is unfair terms and conditions)

I don't see any need for DRM, if i want to steal the game i can, i will and its easier than buying in most cases, if i want to buy i shouldn't be penalised by obstructive software.

When you consider the economics of it:

No DRM = sales to anyone that was going to buy it and no sales from those that were not.

Workable DRM = as above but extra cost due to development of this software and bug fixing it.

GFWL and the like = additional cost for production of software. However due to slating on forums there is likely to be a reduction in sales and active encouragement to steal a game some would otherwise have baught.

Those that believe DRM protects sales name one mainstream game that was not available for illegal download within days or even before release in the past few years. The only people DRM affects are those people who remain within the law and buy games.

bad boy, however if you do actually use it as a trial then i'm sure its within the bounds of disdance selling and the right to trial a product which you dont get with steam.

I miss the demo days, games you like you buy games you dont get no money.

I hadn't use Uplay before, but I got far cry 3 free with my 7950... you mentioned you need an internet connection to use their service, but I've been using steam and uplay without an internet connection for the past couple of weeks
