Could you commute weekly? Only way I'd see that working. You'd be shagged after a 220 mile commute each day, particularly if you needed to be spending long hours down there.
Am I mad even thinking about this (career related)

I could never do that kind of round trip, yeah every weekend would be fine but every day?
I couldn't go 'home' every weekend (300~ round trip) as the thought of it just kills me! I used to not mind driving long distances, infact I enjoyed it but it would kill me now.

That commute will wear on you quickly, perhaps some sort of agreement with your uncle on doing certain days / staying with him while you give it a go.
The biggest concern however is if the business is actually making any money!
So many small businesses are just making enough to survive at the moment and believe me it is not a nice place to be. One unexpected expense could bring you to your knees.
Go through everything with your uncle, as its going to be a lot of work for you if he leaves you to run the whole show.
Why did the guy he was training up pull out? Does he know something you don't?
If it all checks out though, then go for it! Working for yourself is damn hard work but still a hell of a lot better than begrudgingly going to the office every day.

Your hours will be considerably longer than your current, cushy 9-4 number.
If there is a problem you are 2 hours away from sorting it, for example people calling in sick.
I say if you do it, rent your house and move near to the shop.
Or rent a room near the shop and work blocks just travelling back/ forth for your days off.
I used to do 9 hour days with a nearly 2 hour commute, honestly, your life will disappear on days you're working, you'll never have spare time and when you do you're too tired to do anything. And you'll never have any money, spent it all on petrol, car repairs and maintenance.
If you hate your job get out of it, but I seriously doubt you'll like this more unless you move down there.

Four hours of commuting daily is madness.
The opportunity sounds interesting, but if you're serious about taking it up you need to move out there.
Perhaps, while you are "learning the ropes" you could stay with your Uncle for a few weeks, Monday to Thursday, and return home at the weekend? This will give you a chance to see whether the job is something you would like to pursue, and will let you find a place to live locally.

That's about 110,000 miles just on going to work at year.
If you don't get a company car with it it's going to cost loads in repairs as said.
You only real option is move, I know it's going to cost but if you don't do it your going to miss out on a good job

220 a day x 5 = 1100 a week x 52 weeks (assuming no holidays) is 57.2k per year - still way to much mileage to contemplate each and every day!!

You'll be looking for a brand new diesel car every 4 years and driving it into the ground.
Your right, I added it up as 220 there and back.
Still a lot of miles on a car each year.

Sounds like the OP's hearth really isnt in his current place, I suppose you could always get yourself fired. Be careful you dont get burned by the commute, I'd hate to have to say I coaled you so.
