Pick my next smartphone

My iPhone 4 is slowly but surely on its last legs. The lock button now doesn't work and the centre button is very temperamental.

I've always said I will never get another contract, so my next phone will be bought outright, and I will get a sim free deal from giffgaff.

I'm a big apple fan, so the iPhone 5 seems logical. But the £500 purchase cost puts me off. Are there any alternatives that are as good if not better for less £££.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 does not appeal to me, used the original Galaxy once and it was horrible.

Wait a month or so, HTC M7 should be out and the sony xperia Z/ZL are looking very good!

If you can't wait, then look at the nexus 4, one XL, one X+ and one S, all very good and in the end just comes down to personal preference for screen, build/design and software.

Maybe check out some windows phones? I've got a lumia 920 and my iphone5 friend seems to like it.

If there is ever stock then the Nexus 4 is one of the most well priced top end smartphones.

Alternatively, you could look at a mid range phone and go for the a wild card, such as the HTC 8S.

I believe the Nexus is around £240 and the 8S is £230, so both very affordable and will do the same job as any other phone out there.

I have used a S3, but the novelty of it wore off after awhile, any midrange smartphone would have served my needs fine. The only thing I regularly use my smartphone for is sat nav.

I hear the Nexus 4 is going to be back in stock soon and perhaps stay in stock, the ideal phone to get off contract while waiting for the summer 4g revolution and new phones.

The price of the nexus 4 is very appealing. Is it comparable to the iPhone 5?

Pretty much. Camera and battery life isn't as good though! Screen quality in terms of colours, viewing angles etc. isn't as good as the iphone 5 either, but the N4 has a larger screen, which is a huge advantage IMO.

The N4 has a software/driver optimisation problem though, so once that is fixed/improved, battery life should be great.

Nokia Lumia 920? Excellent device, 4G, awesome camera, good quality, robust and whilst somewhat behind on the apps front is making real progress. Doesn't follow the crowd either so makes for a nice conversation point on occasion

Experia z if you can wait for it is look very good.

Personally more happy with the 920.
