7850 BSOD and "Display driver AMD has stopped responding and has recovered"

Hey

Just got a refurbished 7850 last week.

I've had 2 BSODs :(

Also often when opening games or firefox I get the following error:
"Display driver AMD has stopped responding and has recovered"

Sometimes windows locks out after that, sometimes it doesn't.

I've tried the drivers on the disc and also downloaded the newest version of Catalyst control centre, but neither seem to stop the problem.

Is there somewhere else I can try for drivers? Is there anything else I should try before returning it?

Thanks very much for any help :)

Is the card a Pre-Overclocked Model? In the past when I have had the driver crash it was because of a unstable Overclock and I fixed it by increasing the Voltage a tiny touch.
Was your last card also AMD? or was it Nvidia? if it was Nvidia did you remove the driver correct to stop any conflicts?

Thanks

Gigabyte ATI Radeon HD 7850 OC Windforce 2X 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express

So that means it was OCed. Can in increase the voltage in catalyst? Previous graphics was on board.

Hmm, just got BSOD:
Stop 0x00000116 etc.
Atikmpag.sys
So there is definitely some kind of issue. Why would Firefox trigger it though?

I had a similar problem after I upgraded my 6950 to a 7950. I was getting a BSOD regularly. It always occurred immediately after a "Display driver amdkmdap stopped responding and has successfully recovered" error which is slightly different to the error you described.

I reinstalled the drivers many times, using DriverSweeper every time. No effect.

I almost RMA'd the card but then I checked out the forums and found lots of people experiencing similar problems. There were a variety of suggestions for fixing it. The most popular ones were:

- Increase the voltage (slightly)

- Disable Flash acceleration in the browser

- Create a custom profile in CCC (Catalyst Control Center) and increase the idle settings

I spotted a pattern to the problem - It only happened when I wasn't playing a game. In other words, if the card was being pushed then it ran perfectly. More often than not, the problem would occur immediately after booting up the PC or shortly after exiting a game, after I had opened the browser or some other program which didn't push the graphics card at all.

I didn't like the idea of increasing the voltage (because the card is already factory overclocked). I disabled Flash acceleration but that made no difference. So I tried the custom profile approach. It worked like a dream. I haven't had a single driver error or BSOD since.

You asked whether Firefox could causes it. At one point I did think it might be Internet Explorer because I got the error a lot when I was browsing the web. It was actually nothing to do with IE. It just so happened that when I wasn't playing games, I tended to be in IE browsing the web.

I am getting this problem also with a 6870, the only issue for me though is that I can;t see where I can jack the voltage up. I assume that these cards can't be over volted ? In MSI afterburner there is no option to unlock the voltage slider

I've not had much experience with MSI Afterburner but I do know that you can tweak the voltage in a custom CCC profile.

This thread explains how someone fixed the problem with his 6870 by modifying the voltage in the CCC profile:

[UPDATE]
Sorry I just re-read that thread. The profile settings are actually for a 6850 but you get the general idea.

To unlock the voltage in afterburner: h**p://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=338906

thanks mate, unfortunaltey I have a non reference card so it doesn't work, running an ASUS CUII 6870. Oh well, I was hoping I could sort this out untill bonus time when I am shell out for a 7970

Firefox-options-advanced-disable hardware acceleration.

Down load MSI Afterburner or any other program that does the same, an tick the force Volt option this should stop some of your problems also as when stepping down from 2d-3d clocks cause the card to lose to much power.

When trying to resolve my driver not responding/BSOD issues (mentioned above) I did install Afterburner just to see if the "Force volt" option would fix my problems but it had no effect so I uninstalled it. Having said that, I know that it has fixed similar problems for other people so it's definitely worth a try.
