Hi all,

This is my first post so I hope it turns out OK.

Anyway, at the end of November I had a few quid to spare so decided to get myself a new PC so I worked through the System Configurator and bought the following. I should mention that I did this BEFORE I started reading the Forums.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Asus P9X79 DELUXE Intel X79 (Socket 2011) DDR3 Motherboard £274.99
1 x EVGA GeForce GTX 660TI SuperClocked 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £259.99
1 x Intel Core i7-3820 3.60GHz (Sandybridge-E) Socket LGA2011 Processor - Retail £229.99
1 x Intel 330 Series 180GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive - Retail £129.95
1 x Microsoft Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-Bit - OEM (FQC-04649) £119.99
1 x Corsair Enthusiast Series TX 850W V2 High Performance '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply (CP-9020043-UK) £105.98
1 x Patriot Intel Extreme Masters 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Quad Channel Kit (PVI316G160C9QK) £89.99
1 x Alpenföhn K2 Mount Doom CPU Cooler (Socket 775 / 1155 / 1156 / 1366 / 2011 / AM2 / AM2+ / AM3 / FM1 / FM2) £59.99
1 x BitFenix Shinobi USB3.0 Gaming Case - Black £49.99
1 x Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB SATA 6Gb/s 16MB Cache - OEM (ST500DM002) HDD £41.99
1 x Asus Xonar DGX 5.1 PCI-Express Sound Card with built in Headphone Amp £26.99
1 x OcUK 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £18.98
Total : £1,423.82 (includes shipping : £12.50).

It will be used mainly as a workstation type PC ie Office (Excel), photo editing and games by Grandchildren.

I appreciate that it may appear overkill but my thoughts were to buy something that is up to date, that will last for some time and could be easily upgraded if that became necessary. I am curious as to whether I have the right balance or if there any weak parts.

I must say that up to now I am very impressed with it and a good job done by OC

Any comments as to whether I made the right choice would be welcome.

Cheers

You definitely should have posted this before you purchased it.

Some guys on here who know more than me, could you saved you some cash.

If it were me i would have suggested getting a samsung ssd over the intel one, getting an ivybridge i7 and a 7950 rather than the 660ti as the 7950 would have more g-memory and be a high end amd series rather than a mid series nvidia other than that it looks ok, must be a pretty good gaming machine

+1 with this opinion.

I've learnt that everyone seems to like the 7950 more.

also i wouldnt have thrown 275 quid at a motherboard i maybe would have suggested one at around 100 pounds so you could then probably have dual 7950s or another ssd or another hard drive and ssd

To add some additional resilience to your build ....

- I would recommend the Samsung 840 pro 256gb.

- 2 x 8gig sticks instead of 4x4s

- Forget the Xonar DGX - run with onboard and see how you get on before committing to a worthwhile upgrade like an STX when you've saved up

ps I'm siding with you on the Nvidia front.... the ATI will be better bang per buck overclocked but I still prefer the 660TI for overall performance // cad work and gaming

I should have mentioned that I don't have it overclocked and the grandchildren (mid teens) say it is great at games.

I chose the Intel SSD because of the name and having previously had problems with a Samsung phone and TV.

I may be wrong but I assumed that following the System Configurator, it would only give you the compatable components once the Socket and CPU had been selected.

I may be wrong again but I thought that this CPU was designed for having 4x4 rather than 2x8 memory sticks.

Cheers and thanks for the comments.

It's a great build mate well done, wish I had a "few quid to spare" :p

Although the motherboard is probably OTT ;)

You certainly went Ham :)
