I got this application running on my ipad skysports news
allows me to watch sky sports on the ipad (4th generation)

I need a cable that runs from ipad to TV - I see that sky go app won't work (seen this written out a lot)

but will sky sports news app work and let me watch sky sports on my TV?

Just wondering.

Doubtful, probably got the same protection as Sky Go.

When I used to do this same thing (got SS "properly" since) it involved jailbreaking and a "display out" style app using the Apple HDMI adaptor, but I think Sky got wise to this and started putting protection into the app to detect this happening. Might not be an issue now.

Be aware though, even if you did get it working, it looks crap outputting to a big screen.

If you don't get any answers before I get home tonight I'll give it a go to see if the app works without jailbreaking.

thanks

I think same thing as u
prob won't work

even a jb ipad won't work either
sucks that does

Eh? So even if you buy the £30 (or is it £50) Lightning to HDMI connector, not all apps will output through it? Thank goodness I never shelled out for one.

As I suspected, the Sky Sports App on the iPad doesn't allow HDMI output either, just displays a splash screen.

No, some (mostly streaming video) block it as the companies got wise that you, for example, could "borrow" someone's Sky Go account and output sport and movies to a TV. Seems daft seeing as you can do it with an Xbox 360, but there you go. Plus as I said earlier the quality isn't great anyway, but they probably figured there was more chance of someone signing up for a full Sky package with a box if they wanted it in their living room, if they blocked this sort of thing.

Hhmm, that's wierd, as I thought the screen mirroring (double tap home and slide to the vol ume bit where the screen mirror button is) was completely independent of any app. It works for bbc iplayer and other apps that dont have support built in.

That's why I was confused. I assumed the mirroring thing worked at OS level and the display on your TV matched the rotation of the iOS device - like it does at Apple keynote demos.

Further clarification is needed here. :D

Download and try itv player app, it supposedly doesn't work even with mirroring

Just tried Sky Go and it definitely doesn't work :( from in the app you get sound only, and by using mirroring you get 'Hdmi out not supported'

Looking around the net it seems the the only to get skyhook wirelessly is using a Mac with Airparrot and AppleTV

yer thought as much thanks guys

The problem with getting someones account work for the xbox is most people already have 2 devices assigned (2 is the limit)

however if you use the skysports app (only get to see sky sports channels) but it will work regardless of 2 devices already assigned. Guess I will stick with watching it on the small screen for now.

Thanks - good job I didn't buy the cable and find out that way lol

Why is Sky so picky with this sort of stuff? Are they really that worried people will record shows and pirate it?

Presumably they don't want people using "borrowed" Sky Go accounts etc. to output content to a TV for free, and would rather you have a subscription and box with them.

You can use a laptop/PC of course as there's nothing really they can do to block that as they don't have control over an app that way.

What about the apple tv product 99 quid one
Can that enable me to watch sky sports on telly?

If you havnt got a laptop or PC you can use to output it, it would probably just be easier to get as cheap an Xbox and Live subscription as you can if you must have it on a TV.

Some ios apps are just designed not to output via hdmi etc. Netflix works fine but lovefilm doesn't. We use a sony smp-100 to put lovefilm on our hdtv. The picture quality is good enough and second hand on a popular auction website they sell for cheaper than the apple hdmi cable. It doesn't do sky or netflix.

Unfortunately you have to make a list of what you want to watch over the internet and on what to make sure it works.
