Has there been any details released about the new gen xbox that meant to be coming out later this year if it will be able to play xbox 360 games ??

I'm betting on a PS3 PS2 situation where the versions you have will be incompatible with the new machine somehow so you'll have to download the games from XBOX Live as Microsoft rarely miss a trick. Hopefully I'll be proven wrong though.

One second......

i highly doubt they will just trash the previous gen, for something new and shiny.

my prediciotn is yes, it will play 360 games, but maybe just as digital download copies

I would think its very likely as it makes the choice of upgrading MUCH easier for their all ready established 360 base.

It would seem strange digital purchases moving over but physical ones not.

PS3 supported PS2 games in the beginning, but the 360 didn't support xbox games. Sony continued to make PS2 games for ages, but microsoft cut the xbox pretty much dead when they moved on.

The early PS3s had a PS2 Emotion Engine chip installed in them, it was removed from later models to reduce the cost.

Xbox 360 is mostly backwards compatible. There's a list of 400+ original xbox titles that work in all models with a hard drive.

I didn't know that!
Can you stick a xbox disk in a 360 and play it?

I remember being peed off that they cut xbox games dead, handed the console onto my son but it was always rubbish that no new games came out for it.

Yep just stick a game in and try it :)

I used to play RalliSport Challenge / Jet Set Radio Future / Project Gotham Racing from the original xbox on my 360 while i was waiting for some decent games to appear on 360 :o.

They run fine too considering its a software based emulator :)

The Original US and JAP models had the combined Emotion Engine and Graphics Synthesizer chip in them.

Then later consoles and the original UK model had the Graphics Synthesizer chip, with the Cell then emulating the Emotion Engine (with slightly reduced compatiblity).

Then the cost axe fell and the GS was removed and with it PS2 compatiblity.

Hmm, difficult job. It's going to have to translate PowerPC instructions to x64 to have BC.

Apple managed something similar with Rosetta, to translate PowerPC apps to an Intel platform, so it's not outside the bounds of possibility. Whether you could do it fast enough to work well is another matter.

Hmm but that's only "ordinary" software. Games are a lot more demanding. :p
