Hey guys,

After a lot of palava yesterday, my TV didn't arrive (don't ask)

However, I could go to JL tomorrow and pick it up myself...however, it would mean lying it down in the car.

I remember, hearing/reading years ago that Plasma TV's couldn't be transported horizontally, it damaged the screens, apparently.

Is this still or was this ever the case? :)

Can I go get my TV?! :D

Thanks all,
Jake

It's been a number of years but in my old job it was company policy to refuse delivery of any plasmas that weren't transported upright in the lorries. As i said, that's going back quite some time though and tech has moved on.

They can be, the reason they aren't meant to be laid down IIRC is that it can put stress on the glass whilst travelling and may smash..

Be careful over a couple of speed bumbs , I laid mine flat down but that was literally like half a mile.

trust me , between the asian manufacturing plant and your home it will of been transported and stored at every angle possible !

a short car journey shouldnt kill it.

wont it fit upright in the back seats?

When i picked mine up the shop owner said it's fine to lay it down and he would take responsibility if anything went wrong. As stated above, it's likely gone through far worse before you got your hands on it; the polystyrene was utterly decimated when I opened mine up.

Its a 50", the chances of that are slim.

OK should be fine, right. I'll get that organised then.

Replace the gas in the plasma television when you get it home
Look for the dust cap at the back of the screen near the power input ,This is were you refill the gas

:p

I have cancelled my online order and reserver one at Blue Water, all good. :)

I used to work for Philips and for a couple of distributors whose ranges included plasma. People may have "got away" with transporting plasmas flat in cars, but I can assure you that from factory to delivery at the retailer's premises none of the plasmas supplied were ever transported flat.

The issue is the weight of the glass and the fact that it supported at its edges. Hit a pothole and the risk is that the weight of the glass causes it to shatter.

It's up to you whether you want to take the risk. But the professional advice is don't transport plasma screens flat.

Thanks Lucid, good to know :)

I'm going to try and borrow a van tomorrow evening l, if not my car will suffice and a very careful drive home :)

I didn't take the risk with mine, got my brother to get his van to transport it home.

I did lay it down flat on carpet to fit the wall bracket.

I agree with what has been said here.

Get a taxi, ask for a people carrier that can fit a TV in. Mention you will pay the fair + extra for the help and they will radio it out and one of the taxi lot is bound to say yes.

Well I didn't know about this but brought my 50 in Lg back from Curries in the back of my ford focus and its fine. The guy that helped load it in to the car never said anything about it either.
I did hit some nasty pot holes on the way home too but it was well packaged.
Oh, if its packaged like mine you only have to cut the straps on it then lift the box off, this leaves the tv standing on the floor and is easier to lift. I didn't know this and lifted the tv out of the box which was a chore :o :D
