Hey guys,So i'm building my brother a pc he's more of a "Editor" Than me!
So this is for my brothers Birthday and i have a i7 3820 and i'm thinking of giving it him.
So if he has it of me i was wondering if a 3570k is a better CPU,Now my system is for no meaning editing rig,It's predominantly a Gaming system.
I understand that it's a different chipset but would i be able to overclock the i5 to 4.5ghz or more? Because my current I7 3820 is overclocked to 4ghz and is it a very cool temps it hardly hits above 40C at full load with my liquid cooling system i have,So any help would be much appreciated thanks guys.

no matter how you look at it, the move would be a big downgrade, but your brother would get the better deal, while the i7 might not be the gaming chip of choice here, i myself use it and love it, works great if and only if the game supports it, same as apps and programs tbh

It might be a big downgrade but really an i5 3570 is still going to bulldoze through almost anything you throw at it, esp if you are using a decent GPU like 7870 or GTX670(80?).

Well if it was me, if I had a brother and I could see a huge benefit for him but really not that much loss in gaming for me, I would personally go through the swap....hell I give my fiance my hardware, keyboards, mice etc etc all the time like weeks after buying them because I feel as if she is missing out :D

Looks like swings and roundabouts to me. One is faster in some things and the other is faster in others. Looks to be around 50/50 so more of a sidestep than a upgrade/downgrade. See here.

3570k should be more power efficient but they run hotter than Sandybridge.

I'm running gtx 670 in sli on the rampage iv motherboard and i was thinking about getting the i5 3570k Asus Z77 Maximus V Formula so what's everyone's opinions.

My opinion is its a silly move, going from LGA2011 (which has new IB based hex/oct core CPUs out later this year) to LGA1155 (which has less features and is end of life) is a bit silly in the first place but also going from 4 core hyperthreading to 4 core non hyperthreading is a straight downgrade. Yes the 3570K is slightly faster per core than the 3820 at stock speeds but they can both be OC'd (easily with the boards you mentioned) and as the 3820 will OC higher it negates IB's tiny clock for clock advantage over SB.

You would kill your upgrade path and lower the usable life of the CPU, both bad ideas.
