only an upgarde from a 1999 1.2 clio mk2.
not bothered about power, would rather save money on fuel. need a bigger car than my clio(kids car seat) and most importantly needs to be reliable.

i was looking at
mazda 6
ford focus/mondeo

any other sugestions would be great. ideally id like to keep millage to under 60k.

cheers chaps

sorry guys, i dont do a lot of miles, prob max of 300 per month.

And you want to keep fuel costs down? 300 miles a month?

Even at 20MPG you'll be spending practically nothing.

3600 miles a year at 20MPG with fuel at 1.33/l you'd spend less than £700/year in fuel.

I'd rather have a nice effortless wafty car, regardless of engine size and sod the paltry fuel costs at that mileage!

ive got a two year old and low income, need something practical. my racing or any craving for speed days are over, infact, i have never had a speedy car!

I think you are missing the point. You don't need to drive a larger engined car fast, nor will it cost you a fortune to run (as long as its nothing exotic). But for example you'll pick up a newer lower mileage larger engined petrol equivalent than you will anything else, due to everyone wanting a small ecobox.

A nice medium sized saloon/estate, with a decent sized petrol engine, nice amount of safety for the little'un, and decent comfortable place to be for yourself.

mondeo.

4k will get you a very clean, recent model with loads of luxuries. your mileage means you need a petrol.

something like this

you could always go for a focus if you wanted room and family practicality too.
this sort of thing [but they seem more expensive than mondeos]

Interesting that you say loads of luxuries then post an edge. The edge model was a "special edition" which had....nothing. Alloys but that was it. Manual ac, it even doesn't have cruise which every other facelift model has.

I know. If you do low mileage and therefore fuel costs aren't a concern then buying a "large" petrol makes so much sense. So much car for so little money!

The Skoda is a bargain and the big engined argument is sound. HOWEVER..

The guy has said he'd on a low income and has kids to worry about. He might do low mileage but larger cars still have bigger running costs and perhaps his budget is so low that even £700 a year in fuel is quite a lot. I really doubt a 2.8 V6 Auto is the right car for him and as for the guy suggesting a Jaguar, really?

He needs something simple and cheap with a cheap tyre size.

Focus 1.6. Job done. As cheap as you can get without buying an Aygo. It won't break, if it does then it's pennies to fix, the tyres are reasonable, the tax is reasonable, etc etc.

I dont think a Mondeo 1.8/2.0 will cost much more to run and the extra size would be handy with kids

A Mondeo (or equivalent) with a modest engine sounds ideal. Maybe a focus estate or similar if the boot shape would help.

Jag x type.....lol!

The superb linked does look rather nice mind you

The Superb is a stonking amount of car for the money.
However, if can still suit the OP if he can find one with a more sensible engine.

X-type and mondeo are actually quite similar. The jag was based on the mondeo platform and they share a lot of stuff like engines and suspension components.

Add higher insurance for such cars, add higher vehicle tax, add higher maintenance costs.

Oh wait, not so cheap for someone who doesn't want to spend hundreds of pounds every year on a car.

Also when did saving hundreds of pounds on fuel become nothing?

edit:

You also suck at Maths.

3600miles/20mpg * 4.5l * £1.33 = £1077.

3600miles/30mpg * 4.5l * £1.33 = £718.

£360 per year over 5 years = £1800 (ignoring time value of money)

£1800 is potentially a lot of money to someone spending £3-5k on a car.
