Tuxedo shirt- man question

Always very mixed messages here regards Tux etiquette. I read an article late last year in GQ magazine regarding this. According to the magazine they spoke to several tailors London and they all said that wing collars are only to be worn if your jacket has tails.. other wise its normal collar. If you search the interwebz it would seem overall it doesn't really matter.

I've been to 3 black tie events recently (one last night in London) and there is always a good spread of both types of shirt TBH. One thing I do seem to notice is that the people with the wing style collars are always fiddling with them. I personally find them damn uncomfortable as I have a short fat neck so I wear the turn down style but overall I don't think it really matters any more. Just make sure you don't turn up in brown shoes ;)

Proper bow tie and traditional collar.

No OTT frills on front of shirt and get some dress buttons to do the shirt up with too. One of these is ideal

Traditional. Wing is very 90's.

Also, get a proper bow-tie. Not a pre tied one.

What this guy said. You should only go for wing if you're going to a 'white tie' event.

Edit: remember the Internet is very US biased, and they do it plain wrong.

Edit 2: also, it's called a dinner jacket not a tuxedo.

It's a dinner jacket and shirt not a Tuxedo unless you're from merica.... *sorry, pet hate* :)

As for bow ties, a friend of mine used to wear a pre tied velco type Bow tie for when it was done up and switched to a "do it yourself" one to hang round his neck when you unbutton the shirt later in the day for that "rat pack" look :) :D

Yup. If you struggle with tying a proper one this is the ideal stealth-cool way to operate.

Or you could just learn to tie a bow tie.
