Hello GD,

Just wondering if anyone has an opinion on this matter;

I live a few houses down by a petrol station, have done for 6 years or so, and frequently visit the shop.
I've always got on well with the workers there, nothing extra friendly but they know me and i know them. I've always taken for granted that i've been given the correct change, however it's not something i check (more fool me).

Recently i've noticed one of the workers trying to get away without giving me pound coins, it just happened again today and i was vigilant for it, and it was obvious because it was £4 change for a £10 note so it wasn't hard to tell. (Although they padded it out with 50ps).

When i called them on it in the past: "Shouldn't the change be x?", nothing aggressive, i saw the extra pound in their hand and they tried to shuffle it in under the note i had.

Now the reason i'm asking GD what they think is because i'm rather principled, over the years they've probably done it dozens / hundreds of times to me, which is i guess my fault. And it's not so much the money, it could be that they've only done it twice, or 5 times, or less, but it's the fact that they regularly try it.

Should i just be more careful in future, or should i document and take it further? if so what?

Maybe / probably i'm just a bit peeved at my own stupidity, but i simply thought, i understand doing it to a stranger they see once, but a regular customer who's starting to do big petrol fill ups with them... seems to be they're risking their good will for a small amount.

/rant :D

It seems stulid has gone, is there a way for me to report this thread so someone might move it?, thought i checked i was in GD but obviously saw the word general and charged forward like the fool i paint myself to be in OP.

the person giving you the change i doubt has any ownership of the petrol station :p they probably hate their job and hate the petrol station so they dont care

maybe they can make 50pounds or more a night just doing that (maybe they saving up for a nvidia card)

you could complain yep, they will most likely get fired eventually

I think they probably have some interest in the petrol station, a fair few of the workers seem to be related.

But i agree that they could make a fair amount extra doing that, i'm just a bit peeved is all i guess.

I worked with a guy who did this, he took the correct change out of the till but kept a pound in his hand when giving it to the customer. 99% of them didn't notice and those that did were given their correct change with lots of believable apologies. He got fired after being caught after a regular customer complained that they always seemed to be missing £1 from their change when dealing with him.

Must have made a fortune as he worked there for years before that. Basically took £1 per cash transaction with a reasonable amount of change. Tills always worked out correctly so no suspicions were raised.

Kind of backfired though didn't it? All those years of employment with thievery resulting in the sack. Now he has a massive gap in his work history and no reference.

Makes no odds these days. You don't need to put employment dates on your cv anymore, just places of work - most people do, but they can't hold it against you if you don't, to do with age discrimination. In terms of refereemploying employers won't say negative things about you as it leaves them liable. Sadly, unless he was caught and convicted of a crime, it's unlikely a future employer would find out.

Also, I'm not sure this is an offence? It certainly feels like it should be, but I'm not sure anything applies? Some kind of fraud maybe?

There is a certain Burger king on the M1, just north of the M25 where I have noticed this kind of thing. Also the change for a tenner from £20 scam. Three times it has nearly happened to me and I am not regularly there.

My usual lunch stop gave me £16 change from £10 the other day. I said to her as its a small place and she usually rounds down on my lunch.

I never count change out, I'll glance at the till making sure they hit £20 in and make sure what it says looks roughly what I have in my hand.
