2012 Ibiza or what?

I am planing on getting a 2012 seat ibiza FR (either 1.6 Diesel turbo or 1.6 petrol) soon, I like the cars, as you get good feedback through the steering wheel, the pedals are in good position, the seating position is good, and its not too small, or too big.

BUT the gearstick is a bit dodgy getting it through the gate, I.e. getting it from 2nd to 3rd, i have to line it up just right and actually put a decent amount of pressure on the stick for it to go into 3rd.

so, I am thinking, that there might be an even better car out there other than the ibiza that I have driven.

any suggestion on something suitably smallish as this will be my second car and started out with a fiesta so want to work up to a bigger car, with the same sort of engine, and FYI do not want a focus.... or something unreliably french.

P.S sorry 'bout the grammar, have been drinking

Presuming you're coming from an old model Fiesta? Have you had a look at the newish ones? The Zetec S looks quite nice in my opinion

The only way the Ibiza could be considered bigger than a fiesta is if you're coming from one of the older ones. However this strikes me as an odd choice to blow what would be about 11k. If you want a bigger car, quite frankly you're going to be looking at focus sized cars. At which point rule out the Ibiza immediately. However if you're not actually after a bigger car despite saying so then don't ***** a load of money on a 2012 model and by god try some of the competition. As above fiesta zetec s is a good candidate There are plenty out there and don't be so quick to disregard the French in the one category they actually do well.

As for those cars in the class above try maybe a golf, civic or mazda3 seeing as the focus is out.

Also where's the popcorn at as I see this thread following the many similar ones that have come before it.

Edit: really that is in the swear filter?

Will it be fitted with incorrect size tyres, small stuffed toys from the towing eye and roof bars?

Anyway, 11k, hot hatch, moving up from a fiesta - this reeks focus st surely? I know OP says "I don't want a focus" but I only take into consideration reasonable requirements or those backed up with some sort of reasoning.

Where does it say "hot hatch" either? He's thinking about a 1.6 VAG diesel.

Without knowing a budget this is quite difficult tbh.

Has the "FR" brand stopped being the hot/warm one? Didn't twig on the 1.6 diesel part, assumed FR meant warm

Or the 1.6 petrol bit, it would seem.

Still, it wouldn't be OcUK without somebody suggesting a Focus ST without even bothering to read the OP :p

Alright alright. It could have been a fancy TSI arrangement for all I knew. It's not unreasonable to see FR and assume its a hot/warm hatch!

Anyway I'll revise my suggestion to a zetec-s focus

A work colleague bought a new 1.2 TSi Ibiza recently, to replace his 2003 1.9TDi (130) Sport. He loves it, even though economy is a little down on the diesel it has similar performance and a smooth revvy engine that doesn't sound like an old taxi. The low VED bracket is a bonus. Whether he enjoys the same levels of reliability remains to be seen though.

I really don't understand this principle of "working up to a bigger car". If you want a big car just buy a big car. My fiancee went through the same motions when she had a Punto, and was unsure of bigger cars, but now drives a Volvo S60 day to day!

Personally out of the Seat range I would be looking at the Seat Exeo, based on the previous generation audi A4, good choice of engines and a nice place to be for £10k

I went from a Civic Type R/Suzuki Swift Sport to a 5 series. I honestly don't get this 'big car' thing.

Exeo is probably not a bad shout.

Don't touch anything with a VAG DPF unless you are running 50 mile runs to work. People buy them expecting to be able to run them like they did the VAG PD engines and end up in expensive trouble.

I've ran TDi Ibiza's for Almost 10 years and stuck with a PD for my commute. I looked at changing it for a newer one but all the VAG forums and people I have spoken too with the 1.6 CR engines don't have great economy at all compared to the PD or just running petrol and loads of DPF issues.

So you are suggesting that unless you are doing over 23,300 miles a year (just commuting, no social/domestic/pleasure taken into account, so likely to be 25,000+) you will break a common-rail VAG diesel... Just lol.

It is a fancy TSI arrangement since they dropped the 1.6 petrol years ago. Now 1.2 tsi with 105ps or the 1.4 tsi with 150 ps in FR trim. Latter is arguably warm.

NO I'm saying you have to have loads of long journeys involved to get a DPF burn off done. I used to use my PD for a 13 mile run to work each day. That would cause me issues with the DPF. As I said you only have to look at the various VAG forums to see this. I'm not saying just commuting just normally that's the longest amount of mileage most people do in a week.

Look at the amount of large PD diesals that don't do these runs on a weekly basis, that will kill you for the DPF. They cannot be used the same way people have gotten away with running the PD. If you actually look at the burnoff schedule on the DPF, even on my 50 mile run a lot of the time I would struggle to not have the burn abort.

This is quite an interesting read on VAG burnoff cycles....

If it was me I'd go for the 1.2tsi. All the benefits of a small engine and more fun than the 1.6. I'd also look at the dsg gearbox.

I have a 2011 Cupra, apart from being abit light in the steering department it's a real hoot to drive. No doubt thoe people here will disagree.
