LOL at BMWs being rubbishly specced unless you tick loads of options.

Before buying the Lexus, I was speccing a few 5 Series configurations for Dad. The total cost came out near-enough the same (~£58K IIRC), but the BMW needed to have eleventy million options ticked to get Xenon headlights, Adaptive Headlights, folding mirrors, reversing camera, navigation, google maps integration, iPod USB, DAB radio, a decent HiFi, electric boot opening, etc. whereas the Lexus had all that included and was just choosing black paint, radar cruise, and a towbar.

That's because the 5 Series is better than a Lexus RX.

Because that's how Lexus compete. The base product is not as good so the standard specification is very generous to tempt would be 5 Series and E Class buyers.

If I'm reading the post right though, the BMW with the options came to the same price as the Lexus which had them as standard? Surely to tempt the buyers it would have to be cheaper?

It's for a few reasons, but one is so fleets can have a base model 5 Series for half the price of a top one. Not possible with a Lexus, hence why they don't make up the bulk of many fleets.

And lets get some perspective, a base model 5 Series is generously specified. As standard on the absolute bottom of the range cheapest possible 5 Series, you get:

Dual Zone Climate Control
Leather
Cruise
Colour screen with iDrive
USB Audio Interface
Heated Seats
Front and rear parking sensors
DAB Radio

etc etc.

Ok sure it doesn't come with Nav or a self parking system or an auto boot as standard but lets face it, it's hardly like driving around with cloth seats and manual AC.

In the 1 series brochure it says as a sub-header at the top of the M135i page something along the lines of:

"The M135i is powered by an M Performance TwinPower six cylinder diesel engine"

It made my heart race for a nanosecond, opening up the idea that I had somehow just ordered a diesel car without even realising! :D

I also just remembered on their website a while back they also had an error with the M135i engine description, think it said 4 cylinder but I can't remember. Pretty poor IMO.

7" wide? Not that the width is normally specced so I presume it is a typo :)

Do BMW still champ on about their ion sensing ignition? First used in ~2007 and claimed as an "innovation"? Only 19 years after Saab introduced it lol :)
