These are sort of becoming sensibleish money (yet still a rip off I feel!) and I've been having a look at 2006 cars on about 70k miles for the 6k ballpark figure just out of interest...

I don't know a lot about them though. I had a MK4 GTI 1.8 20vt before the Civic and all my reading showed mk4's to be a bit niggly. Mine had it's moments but wasn't too bad for me.

Whats the score with MK5's? I'd want a manual, not DSG... looking at typical faults, problems etc. Are they bad for dual mass flywheels or not quite as poor as the diesels? Things like wiper motors, window regulators etc, do these fail a lot like on the MK4's? Leaking rear wash pipes in the C pillars... anything like that?

Any good info anyone can enlighten me about reference to these cars would come in handy :)

Take one for a spin, you'll love it :)

The only failure on mine was the Diverter Valve, which is as well known thing to go and isn't expensive to change (think mine was £50 inc fitting roughly). Apart from that, no problems here for the last 18 months of ownership (2006 manual).

No problems for 18 months would be bliss! lol. Need to do some digging though, lot more technology on a MK5 GTI than my back to basics Civic...

You'd get a Leon with a better spec, possibly even lower miles and newer for the same....

They do look awesome in Tornado Red though and it's something that has crossed my mind for replacing the Leon Cupra.

I aren't really into the Leon's looks nor extra doors. But they are much, much better value definitely :) They're nice cars, a mate has an FR170 TDI, but not for me.

Are these not another case where the scene tax means the equivalent engined Audi a3 is actually cheaper? Or is that just the r32?

I've had my MK5 Golf GTi - AXX 2.0 TFSi from brand new July 2005. I have just gone over the 100k mark.

Always had mine serviced at the correct times (time service not long life). Main issues with mine have been:
- Steering rack changed under warranty (there was a faulty batch on all VAG cars in 2005)
- Rear parking sensor changed after it fell into the bumper (warranty)
- DV valve upgraded to piston type after being remapped at 50k
- Front suspension coils changed at 80k
- Waterpump failed at 90k so got it changed with the cambelt (they never changed the waterpump at 40k when the first cambelt was changed!)
- Thermostat housing changed at the same time
- Radiator changed at 90k due to leaking coolant

No other issues. Had the odd airbag fault that just needed the connections checking and light resetting (which I did myself with VCDS).

Its a fantastic car! I am on the original clutch on my manual, pads only been changed once, still got some life in the discs!

Sounds ok to me! Not bad with you personally doing 100k in it at all!

Cheers for the website link Duke, I'll get on and do some reading too and check the classifieds :)

iaind I better check the trader, I just assumed Golf's would be cheaper! lol.

I have had mine for 6.5 years and 80k, I wouldn't buy one if you are looking for cheap motoring.

Mine needed the four rear suspension arms replaced due to seized adjusters @ 70k which was needed to allow the wheel alignment to be adjusted (they are only £35-40 each from VW so cheaper than paying to get all the bushes in them replaced). I decided as the front end was feeling a little soft to do a full suspension refresh the difference was night and day I was surprised how soft the old bushes were, the top mounts were also very soft compared to the new ones.

The MK5 Golf also has a known fault with the front wings rusting from the inside out, VW will replace these under the anti corrision warranty, I needed two new front wings and I caught mine very early. I also had small rust spots on the sills that had chipped the paint off the bottom of the doors causing a couple of spots of rust on the door. Fairly minor but VW picked up the bill to spray the doors and sills so I paid to get the rear 1/4s, bonnet and front bumper sprayed so my car ended up with a near total respray at 75k (Looks brand new now :)) If you look at the front wings of MK5 Golfs you will be surprised how many have rust, if you run you finger round the edge of the arch it should be smooth.

Engine wise mine has been fine, I have replaced the cam follower twice now which runs the high pressure fuel pump. Sometimes these are known to fail and take the pump and cam with it the part is cheap at £25 and easy to change. Timing belts/watar pump are recommended to be changed every 40k or 4 years, so going by this most of the early GTIs should be on the 3rd belt however many haven't had any changes. Dump valves are known to go but cheap to replace I got mine from Seat for £30 and changed it over myself.

Brakes last well, my rear pads needed replaced around 50k the fronts at 70k ish.

I had a rear bearing go around 73k which started with the ABS light coming on with a rear sensor fault, no noise was being generated. I expect the other side to go shortly as this also happened around the same mileage with my sister's A3.

The 18" alloys corrode and are hard to get properly refurbished, I got a new set under warranty from VW (2K !) just as the warranty was ending. I look after them and they are starting to go again. I am going to get them refurbed at Lepsons after the winter is over which is aorund £400-500 if you can't drop them off and pick them up.

The stock headlights are poor so you ideally want to get one with Xenons. (not a huge issue or expensive to retro fit as they come up on ebay fairly regulary).

Pretty much every option is easy to retro fit, I think the RNS510 sat nav unit is superb and couldn't do without this including the highline cluster and MFSW (I retro fitted all of these) The MK6 reversing camera thats pops out the rear badge is also handy.

All in all in the last year it has cost me a little over 3k but this did include four tyres and a major service. I do like to keep the car in good condition and could have saved some cash on the respray and suspension work by only changing the bits that needed done to get the wheel alignment done but in my mind if one bit is going the rest won't be far behind and I was very happy with the results of a full refresh.

EDIT Just remebered that mine had a new DMF, VW replaced it under goodwill for free. I couldn't tell it was gone they only noticed when they had the gearbox off due to a noisey release bearing which they also replaced for free. I had to pay for a new clutch other wise the old one was going back in think it was £120 ish. (The old clutch had little wear at 50k) This seems an isolated case from what I have seen on forums but I would expect any clutch change to require a new DMF at the same time.

Ive been wanting a MK5 Golf GTI for a while to upgrade from my Polo GTI 9n3. Im just waiting for the right one to come along not at the basic spec which most seem to be.

Ideally I'd like the Golf MK5 GTI Edition 30, but they are still priced out of my bracket.

I know there are the other equivalents, however the Golf in my eyes is the best looking of the lot.

A colleague is looking at the same thing, gti for circa 6k but all the ones he was coming up with were horrible examples. Rust, lack of history, tacky mods etc. I'm sure there are some decent ones out there, but 6k does seem to be bottom of the barrel for these so you'll need to put up with wading through the usual bottom of the barrel cars.

I tried to suggest the Octavia to him too, but he said "oh god, I'd never own a skoda".... His loss, as the 6k VRSs looked quite tidy!

Great cars, bought one new in 2008, sold it on but regretted it so bought another used last year. I've never ran in to any issues but I think AC condensers can play up.

Paid under £7k for a 1 owner with 70k last March in great condition. Plenty about so take your time.

Had one as a company car 2008/9 and loved it, never had any issues in the 10k miles I had it for, loved the DSG box, drove one with 17 and 18 inch monzas and felt the drive was better on the 17's and that was what I chose on mine and they don't corrode as badly as the diamond cut 18's.

Thanks for all the feedback chaps, some interesting info re: rust too, didn't expect to read that at all! My MK4 was on 152k when I sold it and no rust and really nice shape underneath too.

Problems don't sound too bad, definitely good to know the above snippets to ask owners, would prefer to buy private really, dealers wont have a clue.

My missus thinks I should spend a lot more but in terms of disposable cash I'd need a loan/finance for the remainder if I got a much newer car at the mo and I'm reluctant to do so.

Some great info though, thanks all!

Probably worth asking about oil usage, seems the 2.0T can vary hugely.

Colleague at work just got rid of his because it was using something daft like 1L every 1000 or 2000 miles (I forget the exact figures) which was just considered within spec by VW so they just said to get on with it but was getting on his nerves having to buy and fill the oil so often.

Conversely, my neighbours only seems to use around 0.5L every 5000 miles or so.

Both seem a far cry from my 1.8T that doesn't use a drop though :p

I had one for 3yrs from new and done 110k without any issues at all. I mean like ZERO issues!! Fantastic car. The only time mine had oil changed and topped up was when it went in for annual service unlike my Mk2 TT which needs topping up every 2/3,000 miles!!!
