Insurance No-Claims Woes.

So in 2009, I got my first years no claims on a little Fiesta that I owned, was paying insurance monthy, all fine, completed the year with no incidents and got my first year.

I renewed with that insurance company, then 4 months later I got a letter saying they were ceasing the policy due to payment issues. Turns out the direct debits hadn't been coming out, even though the money was in the account. They hadn't tried to contact me at all, they just cancelled and even when I offered to pay for the whole year up front including interest they turned me away.

So I took my 1 year and marched off to a new insurance company, who gave me shiny new insurance, and I sent them my proof of no claims and now, after spending 2 whole incident free years with them I decided to move to a new insurer who gave me a much cheaper quote.

So I get my letter from the old insurer saying "3 years ncb (proof of ncb not recieved)". Well this puzzled me as I definitely had 3 years and sent them the proof. So I phoned them up and they never received the proof of ncb from my first insurer, but said if I gave them the policy number of the first insurer they would go off and double check and send me a letter with 3 years ncb.

Well, even though that first year was all fine, they point blank refused to accept it as proof of a previous year of no claims because of the 4 months in the middle where my insurance lapsed for lack of payment.

So where do I go from here? I need to prove to my insurer I have 3 years NCB (when I've actually spent 3 years and 4 months insured with no claims) but my new insurer won't accept paperwork that isn't from my previous insurer.

Elephant were first insurer, Tesco aren't taking my NCB from Elephant.

When did the Tesco policy start?

Reason I ask is depending on the start date they may have been the company I worked for up until September this year & therefore I know how they work.

Edit- Infact to make it easier is it an 8 digit policy number?

Go elsewhere, One call cancelled mine because they didn't realize my partner is Romanian. Although she holds a full UK licence and it was declared on the form they claim I didn't make them aware. They asked for NCB, they got it, paper licence copies, they got it, then cancelled the policy and never gave a satisfactory reason.

They cancelled my policy and are demanding an extra 900 pounds out of me. Some Mickey Mouse company called 'Creative' are chasing me for the money. They will have to squeeze it out of me as far as I am concerned.

Don't waste your time just go elsewhere.

Tesco Policy started December 2010.

Apparently they were undergoing a lot of changes when I took my policy out which may be why they didn't get my initial proof of ncb and didn't chase.

Either way. Surely they shouldn't deny me NCB from a previous policy based on another policy which was cut short due to non-payment.

The problem is Tesco will still only issue 2 years NCD, so whoever he goes to will only get 2 years NCD. Or 3 years unverified but in the event of a claim it will just be a massive headache as they may ask for proof.

And yeah they were going through a lot of changes around then, they had just changed underwriter from UKI (Direct Line Group as it is now) I used to have to speak to them multiple times a day as policies moved over at renewal from us and to be honest they were useless!

Basically Elephant need to send you a letter stating you have 1 years NCD ending on XX/XX/XXXX, once Tesco have this they should update your NCD unless there is a complication like a gap in cover which they may want you to confirm why in writing.

Did you complete 1 year with Elephant, then go to another insurer for the 4 months before Tesco??

There is no gap though, in my experience half their staff are useless, they should be accepting the NCD. Get a complaint logged & don't drop the issue.

ring elephant ask them to confirm to you how many ncb you have.
ring tesco give them your elephant policy number
get tesco to ring elephant and verbally confirm the ncb

You have to take some responsibility as well for the 4 month period. Surely you must have noticed that the payments were not coming out of your bank account?

Why should a 4 month gap without insurance be a problem though?

If I choose not to drive for the next 12 months and therefore not take out any insurance for the next 12 months, I will still have the 8 years NCB I currantly have when I start driving again in 12 months time.

In work our admin team chase up any gaps in insurance by asking PH for an explanation, for example they didn't have a vehicle or whatever, then they simply note that on the policy.

Was it an actual 4 month gap though or did your policy run for 12 months, renew & then run for a further 4 months before being cancelled, effectively meaning it ran for 16 months?

How long was your car left uninsured?

To be honest it shouldn't matter either way so long as the gap is under 24 months, ring them up, they have to sort it!

Not quite true.. Usually you are fine if you dont have insurance for a period greater than 2 years, however some of the more budget insurers will not accept NCB if uninsured greater than 12 months.. That is what i have been told in the past anyway.. it may not be the case now..

Is the issue the 4 month gap or could it be that some of your payments during the first year were also not taken and therefore admiral have retrospectively canceled the first years ncb?
