After finally getting the network at the house setup, thanks guys, im just here to try and find an answer as to the realistic wireless N speeds i can achieve on a 300mbps 2.4GHz band?

for example streaming a MKV.

at the moment trying to perform this achieves a speed of 8megaBYTESps

the laptop is definitely reading a 300mBITps connection (had to change the security to WPA2-AES)

i wasnt hoping for amazing things but definitely more than 8megaBYTESps

With all the threads which setup is it you're using, the one with the wap connecting to the router via wifi or wap being the wireless for the router?

If it's the first one then the 8MB/s would be about right for 802.11g speeds. It's also possible you've got a nas that's 10/100 not 10/100/1000 network which again could cause the slow speeds.

If you're lucky 802.11n can hit around 20-25MB/s transfer rate. My fully 802.11n 300mbps 2.4ghz wireless has been able to stream a 1.5GB (5000kbps video) 720p mkv from my pc (gigabit connection on pc, wifi adapter is 100mbps though) to my nexus 7 without issue.

the same speed as me over N?

Really sorry, I posted without reading properly. I'm on G here!

Mental breakdown there over what was being asked (I've been trying to fix an annoying slow Gigabit network problem from nas for ages so was just stuck thinking that...)

Everything is wired gigabit except the n wireless link. No home plugs etc betweenserver and laptop

So basically is operating at g speed

Your speeds seem about right for file transfer on wireless N. Sadly, its never going to set the world alight speed wise compared to wired.

Hmm really? 8 is all I'm goin to get? Looks like I'm going to need 2 copies of all my blu rays.. Or just not bother, that's a lot of extra space to use

Ideally you want an AP with access to the 5ghz band, I upgraded to one and can now transfer at an average of 16MB/s. It helps that I am the only one using the band where I live, the 2.4ghz band is VERY crowded.

*Edit* Im only using an Intel 6230 which I believe is a 2 stream card, I have been meaning to try the 6300 which is a 3 stream which should improve speeds even further.
