Hi guys, been looking around the forums and was wondering about your advice on this laptop:

OcUK Destroyer P170EM

I was planning on getting the i7 3740m, 16gb ram, crucial v4 256gb ssd, seagate momentus xt 750gb 7,200 secondary hard drive...comes with gtx680

It comes to £1653

Reasonable price to pay or can you get this for cheaper?
I am buying a laptop since my desktop is 3 years old, and i move around almost on a weekly basis and fed up of moving the whole thing.
I want the laptop to be able to play absolutely anything for a while to come +/- being overkill

The OcUK Destroyer P170EM is spot on for the price point and you would struggle to find it cheaper.

Down the road you can fit a mSATA SSD for extra storage (marked as a slot for a TV card once you take the bottom panel off) and further down the road you can swap out the optical drive and fit a further storage drive with a caddy.

I will say this tho, it is juffin big :) and the power brick is a monster, so much so mine is sat next to my desktop and only ever move it if l am away from the house on courses.

The OcUK Extreme P150EM 15.6" would be better suited for more frequent moves IMO, depending if you can go without the extra storage from a HDD.

iirc you can also fit an mSATA to the P150EM and boot from that while fitting a mech drive for storage, yes it is sata 2 however unless you are a speed freak this will be fast enough.

Thanks for your reply, very useful.
As for size, anything is more portable than my current desktop and 23 inch monitor i move 120 miles every weekend :S

lol cool.

If you do go for it, l would suggest a specialized backpack to fit all the bits and bobs in + the house brick of a psu.

As you are spending that kind of cash, investing in a hardened laptop bag would be advisable.

Sorry to hijack here (alothugh I'm sure you'll find it useful OP), can you recommend any hardened laptop bags? I need to purchase one for the lappy in sig which will accomodate for the laptop, adapter, mouse and mousepad. Possibly a headset if that's feasible.

Any help appreciated.

Everki Beacon Laptop Backpack

or

Targus XL Backpack

Should do the trick.

I use a Belkin Impulse Line Slim Backpack as l keep the brick in a seperate bag.

I can't say I agree with CEUOTC.

You can get this cheaper, and even if you couldn't, it wouldn't be good value.

For that kind of price, you can get something with dual Radeon 7970M which would be faster than the 680M.

I just bought this laptop but mine has the i7 3840 and Intel 330 SDD, all other specs the same.

I got this as I was being messed around by Dell and I had to send the M18x back because it didn't work properly despite two engineer visits and nearly all the guts being replaced. The laptop from OCUK was totally different, it was dispatched quickly but was delayed due to the snow so I couldn't take it away with me on business as I had wanted. Anyhow, the build quality is great and the screen is fantastic. I bought it with Win8 and all there was no unwanted guff installed on the HDD as you usually get from manufacturers like MSI or Sony. I've got an mSATA drive coming today as my games nearly fill the 750Gb Momentus XT, the keyboard is also backlit and can be configured for multiple colours if that floats your boat.

I would say that overall it is a great laptop. Having compared directly to an Alienware M18x R2 I would say that the Alienware chassis is slightly better plastic, but weighs nearly twice as much as the Destroyer. I also didn't like the lights on the front of the Alienware, a bit too bling for me. The Destroyer is more quiet and the screens are on par with eachother IMO.

I got an Alienware backpack from the Dell website, it's nice and with loads of space and pockets.

I was comparing single GPU build as l pref single GPU setups myself, xfire HD 7970M can be cheaper, however cutting corners with other parts has to be taken, and some complain about the diff in temp between GPU's.

But hey we all got an opinion :)

Well, if you switch the 3740QM for the 3630QM and the 680M for Xfire 7970Ms, you'd get ~P10100 in 3DMark11 compared to ~P6000, and I think it'd be still under £1650.

So whats the verdict here?
Processor not an issue? can get a 3630 QM?
And dual 7970 cards?

EDIT: can't seem to find a laptop with these specs, and if i "build" one its more expensive
