Area devoid of fibreoptics

I live in the great area of Widnes, Cheshire

My area seems to be devoid of Fibre optic broadband, and am getting really cheesed off with the crud upload and download speeds I'm getting from the national service via BT/ Sky....

Is there a timetable as to when more cable will be laid nationally? Or should I look into Satelite broadband as an alternative?

The FO rollout is as and when BT want to in all fairness. Generally prioritised by areas that have higher usage to start with, the remote areas get left behind a little.

Can you not even get Virgin?

When you say BT/Sky are you on Sky Connect or proper LLU Sky Broadband?

I'm less than 700 feet away from my local exchange which states on the above link that it is accepting orders... yet when I have been in touch with "BT" they say it is not in my area.... Frustrated.com heheh

I think that in some instances, if you are close to the exchange you mighty be connected directly, and hence you can't get FTTC as it's the cabinets that get fibre, not exchange > property, or something like that.

As far as I know Openreach are looking into a solution for those directly connected to exchange but I guess considering that end users likely get 20-24Mbit/s they wont be making a massive effort. 700 feet should give a decent connection speed via VDSL but they would have to change the way things work in the exchange. Then there's always FTTP but that rollout will be expensive and will be put off by BT as long as possible I suppose.

Yep sat broadband will give you very high latency due to the way it works dont forget that the signal has a round trip of 60,000km!!

So usless for gaming.

You say you are only 700m from the exchange, what is your speed?? as you should even with ADSL2+ on that distance should have a good connection. Unless you havent had the ADSL2 upgrade on the exchange.

Even at 700m rather than 700 feet I'd still be expecting 15+ easily. My line is apparently 750m give or take and I'm getting 22495kbps.

I can get FTTC but it's still only going to bump me up to 28/6, because this house is ~800m away from the green cab. It's literally at the end of the trunk, next door are connected to a different green cab entirely!

You might sync a little higher. I sync at 40/10 @ 750m.
