Braces (Teeth)

Good post there Kevin thanks.

And cheers norm I guess they ain't too bad but they have always bothered me.

I am gonna go see a dentist soon for a proper opinion. Would be nice to have good teeth when I hit 30

I had mine done a few years ago. The weren't like yours but I'd say in a similar state of disarray (i.e. nothing major) and it cost me about £800 (bottom jaw only). I think I was 21 when I started on it.

Five stages of plastic retainer for about eight months and now a metal wire behind my teeth holding everything still so they can't move back. It hurts a bit when you move on to the next stage but is surprisingly easy to live with. The orthodontist did file my teeth down a bit but not enough to cause pain at all, and only because there wasn't enough space due to how my teeth had moved.

Get it done, you're already regretting not having it done sooner so book yourself in tomorrow.

had mine done when i was in my teens, long old process but worth it. Bottom teeth didnt come out as well as i'd have liked but it is better than the 2 rows of front teeth that were there.

I had a fixed upper and bottom brace for about 2 years. Got it for free cause i was still in full time education. They were quite sore for about a week and a half afterwards, bottom was fine but because my top teeth were quite messed up (gap) Now I have to wear a retainer for a few nights every month.

I've got some at the moment and I'm 30. Been wearing them for nearly 2 years and should be getting them off soon. My teeth weren't too dissimilar from yours, I didn't need any removed just some filing down so they fit a little nicer. Mine have taken a little longer as my bite isn't quite lining up so it's taking ages to get everything in exactly the right position. Baring a little pain for a day or two after adjustment they've not bothered me in the slightest and I just don't notice I'm wearing them. Although my girlfriend does think it's weird.

I've got the Damon system braces which set me back £1450, £400 paid on fitting them and £50 every time I visit (~7 weeks). No interest on that either!

ooo, another thing to note. After braces are removed you need to wear a retainer during the night to stop them moving back. Apparently if you're a child then this doesn't last long. However for adults it's common to need a fixed retainer (they glue a metal bar along the back of your front teeth), or you have to keep using the nightly retainer for ever.

Thanks for the post Yak.

You are similar age and situation to me. A dentist told me last year it would probably take about 18months for me with a fixed brace. He had a good orthodontist at hand but I got posted elsewhere with work.

I move to a new station next month for a number of years so I shall be seeing a person about it then.

Ah I see its been recommended above and you're using it.

As far as I know Invisalign is a less painful process, and when you say a better result over all, how do you mean? The only experience I have of it is that my wifes teeth are now perfectly straight, and she finished her course 2 years ago. She has a carbon fibre wire along the back of the teeth, which I suppose is instead of a retainer.

I think the main advantage of it is that its significantly less obvious than Braces; which if people are using to get their teeth straightened its obviously because they feel self-concious about it (I completely understand incidentally); so the less obvious the better?

I had mine done when I was a teenager, both upper and lower jaws.

Started out with metal braces on front, then onto plastic retainers when they were off. Finally, the upper jaw had a permanent retainer put in (posts glued to back of teeth and wire fitted).

However, my teeth began to shift slight in the upper jaw, meaning the permanent retaining wire began to slip out of the sides, which would gouge chunks from my cheeks, catch my tongue and cause ulcers etc. It was a constant battle having it redone.

Eventually, the teeth just began to overlap again, and the retainer gradually crumbled. There's about half of it left in there -- as in, the left side of upper jaw still has posts and wire, while the right has nothing (but crooked teeth).

Been like that for about 12 years now.

My Dentist prefers to pull them out rather than spend the time trying to put them right. A couple of implants soon and not in this Country because far too over-priced. Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

Invisalign can have problems where the teeth move incorrectly and you have to have a midcourse correction needing new imprints and new aligners, taking longer.

Implants are pretty nasty, not a route I'd take because the dentist can't be arsed to use what you've already got.
