Hello

I am looking to get in to pc gaming and need to build a new rig, and need some advice on parts that would work well. My budget is around £400-450 including a OS.

The parts needed are: CPU, mobo, ram, case, GPU,PSU, optical drive,HDD and OS

I am looking to build a intel rig, and use parts that allow upgrading and can be used in future build if possible.

I was looking at the pentium G and the i3 3220, with either a 7770 or 7850. But not sure which will give the best performance for the money, are these a good combo or should i go with something else?

thanks

If you consider using the developers edition of windows 8 for a few months for free and buy the OS later you can devote more of the budget to components now. If you dont like windows 8 after trying it you can buy windows 7 instead.

Still over the £450 but pretty close. Spec is similar to my buddy idlemans but a better case and PSU (order will be delayed till they come in stock though). Hope this helps

hello

Thanks for the replies much appreciated, what kinda games and settings can i expect from both i3 + 7770 and the i3 + 7850. does the performance increase of the 7850 justify the extra spent.

Also is z77 mobo worth spending the extra £20+ since i cant overclock etc.

thanks

Depending on the age of the game the i3 + 7770 should be fine for running games are around medium settings at 1080p. That B grade 7850 will perform significantly better

Going for the Z77 will make it easier to upgrade in the future to a 'K' series socket 1155 chip. Also you can make use of Lucid Virtu which can boost graphical performance in games.

The i3 is a great bang for buck CPU and will handle games just fine. Granted you can't overclock it but the Z77 mobos have sataIII should you wish to add an SSD later as an upgrade and of course you might want to drop in an i5K much later on (even if it is 2nd hand) and then you can overclock it.

The 7850 you can overclock and the GPU excels at this. 1GB GPUs are false economy really and I think the 7770 is pretty poor value to be honest, it would be thrashed by a nvidia 1GB 460 and they go 2nd hand for £50ish (I own one). For gaming the GPU really is important and the 2GB 7850 is really the best midrange GPU to aim for

Once again thanks for the replies, looks like the i3 + 7850 be best option and best value for money. Also what are them b grade items like, are they just damaged boxes or missing bit etc, how do other people get on with b grade parts.

Is the asus z77 mobo the best value for money or are they any other worth looking at?

thanks

Yeah B-Grade are usually returned items so it's a likely possibility they will be missing accessories not like you need any for a GPU or HDD anyway :)

They will be provided with 90 day warranty from OCUK and remainder of original manufactuer warranty

Hello

Its time to buy the new rig in next few days, but some of the product that have been suggested have gone up again, and seeing i am on a very very tight budget are there any other suggest that will often similar performance or just a cheaper alternative, especially the motherboard.

I am still looking to get a i3 and the hd 7850.

Also would the corsair 430 builder psu in modular for around same price be a better option to go for.

thanks

Hello

yer budget still 400-450, would it be worth going for a cheaper gpu to get me by for the mean time. Also i am still bit worried about the b grade components and whether getting a z77 is worth it and suitable for my budget.
or as suggested i could also use developers edition of windows to get better components

thanks

ok thanks

i will probably get the 2gb version then. i stilll debating on whether or not to get a z77 motherboard as i could use the saving to get a better gpu etc but a z77 give better option in the future.

thanks

Well the new Haswell chips will be coming out later this year along with a new socket so I can't understand people that recommend Z77 for "future upgrade" as new tech is always coming out and when it's time to upgrade people go with the latest :)
