My girlfriend delightful tiny dog ate her laptop charger a while back. She bought an I branded replacement charger and it was fine. However, this charger seemed to stop working so she shared our housemates charger as he also has an hp laptop. Now the laptop won't charge at all. It is possible to get a charge if you wiggle the charger enough/get lucky. The charger works fine in his laptop so we have a problem.

Is there a way to test the battery to try to narrow down where the fault lies? If the battery is ok then it's the physical connection between the charger and the battery. Does anybody know if this is a common problem in laptops (specifically HP) and if it is easily fixed?

Desperate to get this sorted. I am having to use a phone because my laptop has since been occupied.

Cheers!

In that case it is either (in order of most to least likely) a dry/cracked solder joint, cracked PCB (that the power socket is soldered to) or broken/dirty socket.

The little charging light only illuminates if the charger is in the "perfect position" and takes a whole to find. I am no electronics expert but I can work a soldering iron. I'm fairly reluctant to but I'll open up and have a look for anything obvious. Thanks for the advice.

Is the charger for her specific laptop model if not get a new charger the battery is not your problem if it is the same charger then i would go with what l33.
