Hi all, first post, despite joining 2011. I had originally intended to upgrade my rig back then, but circumstances changed and I took myself out of the pc building/upgrading game. However I'm back now, and I need some help.

Current build (from 2008):
Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q66002.40Ghz 1066FSB SLACR 95W edition
Noctua NH-U12P CPU Cooler
Asus P5N32-E Plus SLi nForce PCI-Express DDR2 motherboard
BFG GeForce 8800 GTX OC 768MB GDDR3
Crucial Ballistix 2x1GB DDR2 PC2-6400 800Mhz (was previously 4x1GB)
Sony NEC Optiarc AD-7200S 20x DVD+-RW Dual Layer
Corsair 650W TX Series ATX PSU
2x Western Digital Caviar SE16 320GB S300 16MB
HANNSG 19" Widescreen HW191D
Antec P182 Advanced Super Midi Tower

I'm a moderate gamer, playing Skyrim and FM2013, with the intention of getting Borderlands 2 soon. Still using Vista Ultimate 32bit OS. I'm not really that bothered about overclocking my rig either, I was an overclocking newbie back in 2008, and nothing has changed since then in that respect.

Looking to upgrade and I want to get as much performance improvement as possible for only £500. If possible, I'd like to keep some parts if they don't need replaced, like the PSU, HDDs and case. I might replace my monitor, but not sure yet, depends how much everything else will cost. My current mouse and keyboard are looking pretty worn out, so will probably replace them with whatever is left from the £500.

The budget is pretty much fixed, but if I can sell any of my old parts on ebay, that will go directly into my upgrade funds. However, is any of it worth selling on?

Any advice would be much appreciated on either upgrade suggestions or resale feasibility of old parts. Thanks.

Definitely sell those parts on. £500 is a tight budget to get a gaming rig on but it's doable. Sell your other parts and you'll have enough to get a real good rig out of it :)

Thanks guys, the i5-3570k looks great. So does the 7850, I've have never gone with ATI in the past, but I'm assuming they have upped their game since 2011 though.

Currently using a Logitech MX518. It has served me well, i would probably go to logitech again for a replacement. i have fairly small hands though, and any replacement would have to be the same size or smaller preferably.

Yeah, I've seen some stuff on ebay, I might be able to squeeze some extra monies outta my old gear.

I don't suppose anyone knows anywhere in Newcastle Upon Tyne that I can go to have a look at a decent selection of gaming mice and keyboards? I wandered into PC World/Currys and there was hardly anything in there...

Unfortunately that's a different Newcastle :( otherwise, I'd be in there constantly, and they'd probably need to get security to remove me from the premises at closing time.

Just spent around 500 as well. Had similar specs as u, 500 more than enough to play all the latest games provided that u keep some parts( I used my old psu and case)

Yeah, I saw that the other day. Shame it's outta stock, but then I'm not planning on buying anything until end of Feb/start of Mar. If they don't have them in by then, I'll probably just get a free one from Noctua directly.

I went over budget a bit, and bought this, and changed out the RAM for some http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-300-CS&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1517 instead. I figure I can get all the peripherals later, and just blow the budget on the good stuff :D

It should be alright, by my estimation. Worse case scenario, I just move the fan to pull rather than push. Figured the tighter timings and better heat spreader justified the extra couple of quid.

Built this last Friday night. It's been running well since. Very impressed, thanks for the suggestions. Gigabyte motherboard was so easy to setup, I even did a little bit of overclocking. CPU @ 4.0GHz and RAM @ 1833MHz

By the way Noctua were amazing. They sent me their mounting kit, and it arrived in a week. Well packaged and completely free. Installing it was extremely easy, and seems to be a quality piece of kit, and not just some publicity gimmick.

No problems with the ram or cooler, did you get the mounting kit?
Nice to see everything worked out OK.
Got Crysis 3 up and running?
