Thinking of going to Boston this summer mostly thanks to Icelandair's ridiculously cheap fares. Now I know there isn't enough to amuse me in Boston for two weeks but would there be enough to check out in the near vicinity to spend a two week road trip there?

Anyone been up that end before?

Ta muchly

Yes. Boston is a great place, preferred it more than NYC if anything. Good shops, bars, restaurants etc but not quite as manic.

We spent a few days in Boston and then went up to Portland (Maine). I remember stopping at a lovely little place called Perkins Cove on the way on to Portland.

This is one of my options for my trip later this year (The other being Seattle and British Columbia).

Looks like there is pleny to do to satisfy a 2 week trip - you've got Mount Washington in New Hampshire which is worth a look and lots of lovely scenery in Vermony as well. You can also carry on up to Canada and visit Montreal and Toronton. I'd even managed to squeeze going round via Toronto and Chicago in, as well.

What sort of flight prices were you finding?

Been to Boston before and it was nice, though I then went South to New York instead of North.

Flights coming in at circa 550 with iceland air from Manchester going in July. The mrs is a teacher so we are a bit stuck for dates. Iceland air offering a whopping 50kg per person luggage though!

It's the accommodation we are struggling with. Don't know the first place to begin to find places to visit of interest in Boston/Maine and subsequently arrange hotels nearby

Is that £550 each? That sounds like very much the opposite of a bargain to me? Or is that for two, in which case, thats great value.

UK to Boston is the shortest route to the US - it is therefore usually amongst the cheapest of destinations second only to New York City.

plenty to see in this area, have a trip to the white mountains if your here, its about 3 hrs from Boston and you can drive up to the top of mount washington. Theres also a large outlet area in Kittery Maine, which is just off I95 as you get into Maine. If you do visit the white mountains theres another large outlet area in North conway. Also New Hampshire doesnt have sales tax so you can save 8-10% on prices.

The Zoo ( York ) in Maine is a bit rubbish, but the Maine wild life park is much better.

Just be aware people in Mass drive like complete dicks.

If theres anywhere you might want to visit in New Hampshire, etc drop me a trust, i might have been there :)

There's little below 450 these days on NYC/Boston routes because of the new taxes in force from April

APD isn't rising in April - it went up by a whole £5 last April though. Prices post April *are* expensive at the moment but this is always the case at this time of year. The US is in Band B so it's 65 quid, not a huge proportion of the ticket cost?

Is there a change in taxation at the US end or something?

I'm not sure mate, I just put it down to taxes/fuel duty. It just seems so much more expensive to fly transatlantic these days. Reading in to it, it can't be APD...

I've never seen it under 400 in years from Manchester and under 600 is a bargain in my eyes, I suppose it boils down to what you are prepared to pay. Vegas flights are 800+ at the time we want to go, it's galling paying that when we have had em for 600 or so before.

School holidays are a nightmare!

Anyway, what are the main sights around Boston/ Maine?

Can't say I've been there, hasn't it been knocked down,as they use the Eithad Stadium now, best off asking in the Sports Arena ;)
